An apparatus for penetrating bone and accessing bone marrow is provided. The apparatus may include a penetrator assembly and a powered drill. The penetrator assembly may include a trocar having a stylet. The penetrator assembly may also include an outer penetrator having a hollow cannula and a luer lock attachment. The powered drill may include a housing enclosing a motor and a power supply and associated circuitry. The powered drill may also include a connector receptacle for receiving a penetrator assembly connector of the penetrator assembly. The connector receptacle may releasably lock the penetrator assembly connector into place with the powered drill. The power supply may include a rechargeable battery within the housing for supplying power to the motor. A battery indicator may be provided to indicate a level of the battery.

A bone marrow access apparatus includes a bone penetrating member having an internal channel having an opening at a proximal end and an opening at a distal end. A valve cap is engaged with the bone penetrating member, the valve cap defining an interior cavity in which part of the bone penetrating member is situated. The valve cap includes a valve having an opening having an open state in which the channel is not obstructed and a closed state to prevent flow of a material through the channel. The valve is repeatedly switchable between the open and closed states. The bone penetrating member has an upper surface and a seat which is below the upper surface, the seat being located at an interior of the bone penetrating member, and the seat being engageable with an installation or removal instrument.

A penetrator assembly operable to provide access to a bone marrow is provided. The penetrator assembly may include an outer penetrator and a removable inner trocar operable to penetrate bone and bone marrow. The removable inner trocar may include a groove operable to receive a portion of the bone and bone marrow when the outer penetrator and the removable inner trocar penetrate the bone and bone marrow. The removable inner trocar may include a receptacle operable to receive a portion of a connector operable to releasably attach the penetrator assembly to a powered apparatus, and a release mechanism disposed within the receptacle and operable to engage the portion of the connector.

A method of harvesting cancellous bone and marrow from an individual's posterior superior iliac spine using a bone press apparatus includes: creating an opening in cortical bone of the posterior superior iliac spine; accessing through the opening and loosening for extraction cancellous bone and bone marrow; inserting a suction apparatus through the opening and extracting the loosened cancellous bone and bone marrow, the suction apparatus being attached to a first lid of a collection container, the first lid of the collection container having a suction port to which a suction source is connected; disconnecting the suction source from the suction port and replacing the first lid with a second lid having a suction port and a plunger with a press head; filtering the extracted liquid by depressing the plunger; and pouring the filtered liquid through the suction port of the second lid into another cup.

A bone biopsy device includes an outer cannula having a mouth with a cutting edge to section a frustule of spongy bone, a plate mounted slidably within the cannula with a semi-cylindrical portion at its end, and a stylet mounted slidably within the plate and having a pointed tip protruding from the mouth of the cannula to pierce the bone. The mouth has a narrowing and the semi-cylindrical part of the plate has at its end at least one pair of opposed lunettes/anchorages bendable, with respect to a horizontal plane, towards the interior of the semi-cylindrical portion when they encounter the narrowing of the mouth, thereby occluding the lumen of the plate and clasp the base of the sectioned frustule and allow extraction of the frustule by way of the plate whilst the cannula is kept at the operating site, allowing aspiration of marrow after the frustule has been removed.
