Auto discovery and auto provisioning of set top boxes
A system and method for the automatic discovery and provisioning of a video set top box within an IPTV network is provided. When first connected to a residential gateway, the set top box requests the address information of the residential gateway. The set top box then sends a request to a video operations and support server (VOSS) with the identifying information for the set top box and the residential gateway. Once the VOSS determines that the residential gateway is authorized for video service, the VOSS associates the residential gateway with the set top box. The VOSS then communicates the authorization to a middleware server, which downloads client software and encryption keys to the set top box, enabling the set top box to request and receive video content. The set top box may be reconnected to any port on the residential gateway and receive video service without being re-provisioned.
Method, Apparatus and Communication Device For Handling Broadcasted or Multicasted Content
A method executed in a network node capable of broadcasting or multicasting user content delivery to communication devices comprise: preparing of different versions of user content to be broadcasted or multicasted to the communication devices; preparing, for each version,a respective instruction arranged to instruct each of the communication devices to, based on its device capabilities, automatically select at least one of the broadcasted or multicasted user content version/s when the respective communication device is capable of handling the respective version/s and/or to automatically discriminate at least one of the broadcasted or multicasted user content version/s when the respective communication device is not capable of handling the respective version/s; transmitting the instructions to the communication devices via broadcasting or multicasting, and transmitting the different versions of user content to the communication devices via broadcasting or multicasting. A method for receiving such provided content is also described, as well as an apparatus and communication device on which these methods can be executed.
Streaming policy management system and method
A streaming policy management system and method wherein bandwidth may be allocated based on external device information received from a streaming client device connected to one or more external audio/video (A/V) devices. When a streaming network back office receives a request from the streaming client device for delivery of a particular content, wherein the request includes external device information of one or more external A/V devices connected to the streaming client device, a bandwidth is determined for streaming the particular content to the streaming client device and a request may be made to a content delivery network to create a distribution pipe having the bandwidth to accommodate the delivery of the particular content. A manifest file is provided to the streaming client device that includes one or more pointers that point to content segments of the particular content.
METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR DEVICE CAPABILITIES DISCOVERY AND UTILIZATION WITHIN A CONTENT DISTRIBUTION NETWORK
Methods and apparatus for determining and selecting digital coding and/or decoding technology, delivery bitrates, and resolution parameters for programming and data delivery over, e.g., a content-based network. In one embodiment, the network comprises an HFC cable or satellite network that includes a server process interfacing with a plurality of customer premises equipment (CPE), and/or associated client devices, each having different display resolution, bitrate, and/or decoding capabilities profiles. The server determines the one or more capabilities possessed by the CPE or client device, and evaluates one or more program or content choices for possible delivery to that CPE or device based on its profile. The selection process may also take into consideration network and/or CPE operational considerations, such as conservation of downstream bandwidth, CPE uprating capability, client device power consumption, and the like.
Video-on-demand content delivery method for providing video-on-demand services to TV service subscribers
A video-on-demand (VOD) content delivery system has a VOD Application Server which manages a database of templates for presentation of video content elements of different selected types categorized in hierarchical order. A web-based Content Management System receives content uploaded online in file formats with metadata for title and topical area, and automatically converts it into video data format compatible with the VOD content delivery system indexed by title and topical area. A User Interface for the system delivers listings data to the viewer's TV indexed by title and topical area specified by the uploaded metadata.
Content access
Techniques are described to provide content access. In an implementation, a determination is made at a client that a high-definition channel has content that matches content provided by a standard-definition channel. Access is provided to the content via the high-definition channel and access is restricted to the content via the standard-definition channel up the client is capable of outputting the content and high definition.
Method and system for trigger management in an interactive television environment
A trigger manager and related processes and systems for managing triggers for a plurality of subscribing set-top boxes in an interactive television environment are provided. In response to receipt of a configuration update request originating from a specific set-top box, the trigger manager accesses a database of subscribing set-top box profiles associating subscribing set-top boxes with respective sets of triggers. The database is processed based on the configuration update request to identify a profile associated with the specific set-top box from which the configuration update request originated. Trigger update information associated with the identified profile is transmitted over a network to the specific set-top box from which the configuration update request originated. In response to receipt at the specific set-top box of the trigger update information, the set of current triggers in the memory unit is updated at least in part based on the information received.
Method for delivering video content encoded at one or more quality levels over a data network
A client device receives streamed encoded content data, such as encoded video data, which has been encoded at a constant perceptual quality. Several different versions of the content are available to be streamed to the device, at different perceptual quality levels. In order to decide which quality level to request from a content server at intervals the device calculates the delivery rates that would be required for each level of quality. The calculation of the delivery levels is made in dependence on whether the actual delivery rate that has been received so far is greater than or less than a constant bit rate delivery schedule that decreases monotonically but which guarantees to deliver the encoded data in a timely manner such that no buffer underflow and interruption of reproduction takes place. The monotonically decreasing bit rate schedule is defined by one or more critical points, which are the points at which the bit rates are decreased, and correspond to the points where the delivery schedule is just equal to the decoding schedule of the encoded data. At such points there would be no encoded data in a buffer at the client. If the delivery rate has been greater than the constant bit rate schedule for a quality then the delivery rate required going forward for a particular quality level can be calculated from the critical point information, and no more complicated calculation is required.
EXPOSURE OF PUBLIC INTERNET PROTOCOL ADDRESSES IN AN ADVERTISING EXCHANGE SERVER TO IMPROVE RELEVANCY OF ADVERTISEMENTS
A method, apparatus and system of exposure of public internet protocol addresses in an advertising exchange server to improve relevancy of advertisements are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method of a client device includes applying an automatic content recognition algorithm to determine a content identifier of an audio-visual data. The client device then associates the content identifier with an advertisement data based on a semantic correlation between a meta-data of the advertisement provided by a content provider and/or the content identifier. The advertisement data may be generated through an advertising exchange server based on the content identifier of the audio-visual data and/or a public internet-protocol address associated with an application requesting the advertisement data. A provider of the content identifier may receive a compensation when the advertisement data is associated with the audio-visual data based on the public internet protocol address associated with the application requesting the advertisement data.
Method of transmitting at least one content representative of a service, from a server to a terminal, and associated device and computer program product
A method is provided for transmitting at least one content representative of a service, from a server to a terminal. Such a method includes a preliminary preparation phase of the service and a phase of transmitting. The preliminary preparation phase includes a step of providing the service by a creator, in the form of a textual description comprising a text portion and at least one program instruction, and a step of translating, in a compilation environment, the textual description of the service into a service program, including executable instructions. The phase of transmitting the content to the terminal, includes, on receipt of a request by the terminal, a step of executing the service program on the server, delivering the content in the form of binary data, and a step of transmitting the binary data to the terminal.
