A high strength and high toughness magnesium alloy, characterized in that it is a plastically worked product produced by a method comprising preparing a magnesium alloy cast product containing a atomic % of Zn, b atomic % of Y, a and b satisfying the following formulae (1) to (3), and the balance amount of Mg, subjecting the magnesium alloy cast product to a plastic working to form a preliminary plastically worked product, and subjecting the preliminary plastically worked product to a heat treatment, and it has a hcp structure magnesium phase and a long period stacking structure phase at an ordinary temperature; (1) 0.5a<5.0 (2) 0.5<b<5.0 (3) ab.

Mold insert for improved heat transfer

A mold block includes a tool body with a contoured finished surface adapted to receive a tool insert having a forming surface for forming a bottle neck in a molding operation. The tool body defines an internal channel for heat transfer with the forming surface. At least a portion of the channel is offset generally equidistant from the finished surface to provide a path contoured for conformal cooling of the insert. The tool body has a pair of ports intersecting the channel. Several methods for forming a mold block are disclosed and include machining a contoured finished surface adapted to receive a tool insert on a tool body, forming a heat transfer channel within the tool body, and forming a pair of ports into the tool body. At least a portion of the channel is offset generally equidistant from the finished surface for conformal cooling of the insert.

Method for manufacturing forged steel roll

A method for manufacturing a forged steel roll comprises: casting, by the ESR method, a steel ingot which contains, by mass %, C: 0.3% or more, Si: 0.2% or more, Cr: 2.0-13.0% and Mo: 0.2% or more, and further contains Bi at 10-100 ppm by mass; and forging the steel ingot to manufacture the roll. According to this method, since freckle defects can be sealed near the center of the steel ingot, the roll can be stably used over a long period of time.

A metal matrix composite article is described that includes a metal component, a ceramic component, and a lubricious component. The metal matrix composite article has a first surface and a second surface. The lubricious component is present in an amount that is highest at the first surface and is lowest at the second surface. The ceramic component is present in an amount that is highest at the first surface and is lowest at the second surface. The metal component is present in an amount that is highest at the second surface and is lowest at the first surface. In some cases, the metal matrix composite article is a wear plate for a fifth wheel hitch.

Producing a metal component with a casting-and-forming tool

A metal component is produced using a casting-and-forming tool by casting a melt of a metal alloy into the casting-and-forming tool, wherein the melt is poured from above into a base part or reservoir of the casting-and-forming tool at a first pressure, applying pressure to the melt between the base part and an upper part while the melt is solidifying to a component, wherein the solidifying melt is pressurized at a second pressure, which is larger than the first pressure, when the melt is at least partly, i.e., mostly solidified to form a component compressing the component by relative movement of the base part to the upper part so as to compress the component with a third pressure, which is higher than the second pressure.

Method for manufacturing metallic reflector for LED package

A metallic reflector manufacturing method for an LED package. The method includes preparing a metal plate, and processing a stamping reflector that includes a lower body and an upper body that is extended from an upper side of the lower body and is integrally formed with the lower body. A reflection surface that is slanted by a predetermined angle is formed at a central portion of the upper body and the lower body to reflect the light of the LED chip to the outside. A fixation portion is formed to fix the lower body on a substrate that the LED chip is mounted on. The method further includes sequentially plating Ni and Ag on the reflection surface or the stamping reflector surface. The stamping processing includes a piercing step, a drawing step, a first noting step, a half etching step that forms the fixation portion, and a second notching step.
