Rigid insert shape control in layer jammming systems and methods

Systems and methods are provided for gripping of a workpiece with a layer jamming structure having rigid datum structures. A system includes a layer jamming structure configurable in an inactivated conformable state, with a membrane defining an internal cavity containing a number of overlapping material layers. The rigid structures engage the layer jamming structure. A pressure system includes a pump coupled with the internal cavity to change a pressure therein to transform the layer jamming structure from the inactivated conformable state to an activated rigid state disposed around the workpiece. The rigid structures help conform the layer jamming structure to the workpiece during transformation to the activated rigid state and to present datum fixturing surfaces in the activated rigid state.

A method of providing datum features on a ceramic article including the steps of providing a ceramic member having a plurality of substantially parallel holes extending into the ceramic member. Providing a plurality of tubular mounts, the cross-sectional area of each tubular mount being less than the cross-sectional area of the corresponding hole. Applying adhesive to the exterior surface of each one of the tubular mounts and inserting an adhesive covered tubular mount into each one of the holes. Providing a fixture member having a plurality of substantially parallel projections extending from predetermined positions. Positioning the ceramic member on the fixture member such that each projection locates in one of the tubular mounts and fixes the tubular mounts at the predetermined positions. The ceramic article may be removed from the fixture member or located in a machine tool using the fixture member and machining the ceramic article.

A pressurizing suction-attachment table is provided with a porous body having a suction-attachment surface on which an object can be placed, an elastic member directly provided to the porous body, and a frame body supporting the porous body with the elastic member therebetween. An aspiration space is formed between the porous body and the frame body. The pressurizing suction-attachment table is provided with an aspirator capable of aspirating the aspiration space to cause the object to be suction-attached to the suction-attachment surface. The porous body includes an opposite surface positioned on a side opposite to the suction-attachment surface. The frame body includes a receiving surface for receiving the opposite surface when the elastic member is elastically deformed due to pressurization of the object placed on the suction-attachment surface onto the suction-attachment surface. The pressurizing suction-attachment table is configured such that, when the opposite surface is received by the receiving surface, the porous body applies a uniform reactive force to the object being pressurized.

Clamping device

A clamping device configured to automatically pull and clamp workpieces includes a clamping module and a driving module. The clamping module includes a sliding block, two clamping members positioned at two sides of the sliding block, and a connecting plate connected to one end of the sliding block. The driving module includes a driving member. The sliding block defines at least one pair of guiding grooves, and a distance between the paired guiding grooves is increased in a direction toward the connecting plate. The two clamping members are mounted on the guiding grooves of the sliding block in a sliding way. The connecting plate is fixedly connected to the driving member. When the connecting plate and the sliding plate are driven by the driving member, the two clamping members move toward or away from each other to clamp or release the workpiece.

In the tubular clamp system of the present invention, a plurality of tubular clamp modules is used and various driving wheels and driving belts are disposed to enable synchronous adjustment of the positions of the support rods and the length of the pressing belt, so as to rapidly complete clamping of rolls having different diameters and provide a desirable tubular clamping force.

The present invention makes a rotary movement smooth, the rotary movement allowing direct detection of the movement of an output member of a rotary clamp. In a clamp, an output member is accommodated in a cylinder hole. A first valve chamber, to which compressed air is supplied, is provided between a lower wall of a housing and the output member. A second valve chamber is a hollowed out portion of the output member so as to be provided open toward the first valve chamber. A valve rod is inserted into the second valve chamber from the lower wall. A valve rod passage that allows the second valve chamber to communicate with outside air is provided in the valve rod, and a seal section is provided in a peripheral gap where the valve rod and the second valve chamber move relatively to one another. The gap is formed so that, as the valve rod and the second valve chamber are in relative movement, there is a region which is sealed by the seal section against movement of the compressed air through the gap between the valve rod and the second seal chamber and the there is a region which is open from the seal.
