Modular mandrel for monolithic composite fuselage
A method of manufacturing a self-supporting, monolithic fuselage body, including engaging peripheral mandrel sections around at least one central mandrel section, placing uncured composite material on the mold surface, curing the composite material on the mold surface, and sliding the central mandrel section(s) out of engagement with the peripheral mandrel sections and disengaging the peripheral mandrel sections from the cured composite material without collapsing the mandrel sections. The peripheral mandrel sections each include a shape-retaining core of a thermally insulating material and an outer layer on an outer surface of the shape-retaining core. The outer layer has a coefficient of thermal expansion within the range of variation of that of the coefficient of thermal expansion of the composite material. A mandrel for layup and cure of a predetermined composite material in the manufacture of a monolithic fuselage is also discussed.
Multi-layer metallic structure and composite-to-metal joint methods
A composite structure comprises stacked sets of laminated fiber reinforced resin plies and metal sheets. Edges of the resin plies and metal sheets are interleaved to form a composite-to-metal joint connecting the resin plies with the metal sheets.
Self heating structural adhesives for out-of-autoclave and out-of-oven curing
Systems and methods are described for applying a self-heating structural adhesive to components of aircraft or other structures. A conductive scrim can be placed in between layers of adhesive for use in joining two components together. Leads can be provided to apply an electrical current to the scrim, which can raise the temperature of the system and cure the adhesives, creating a strong bond with a conductive layer there between.
Shrouded rotary assembly from segmented composite for aircraft
A shrouded rotor assembly for an aircraft. The shrouded rotor assembly comprises a stator hollow structure comprises formed from a plurality of composite angular segments. Each composite angular segment includes: a core arched section of a central hub casing, a peripheral rim section of an external hollow duct and a pair of angularly opposed sliced portions, respectively for one of a pair of guide vanes. The resulting stator hollow structure is a unitary one-piece, integrating together continuously the composite angular segments. The invention typically applies e.g. to aircrafts such as rotary wing aircrafts.
Loop Yoke for Proprotor Systems
A yoke for providing a centrifugal force retention load path between a proprotor blade and a hub of a soft-in-plane proprotor system operable for use on a tiltrotor aircraft. The yoke includes a continuous loop having a longitudinal axis and first and second longitudinal sections extending between inboard and outboard arcuate sections. A flapping bearing receiving region is disposed at least partially within the inboard arcuate section to an interior of the continuous loop. A centrifugal force bearing receiving region is disposed at least partially within the outboard arcuate section to the interior of the continuous loop. The continuous loop is formed from a composite material having a plurality of double bias material plies and a plurality of unidirectional material plies such that the number of unidirectional material plies is greater than the number of double bias material plies.
Methods and apparatuses for providing corrosion protection to joined surfaces
Methods, systems and apparatuses are disclosed for joining assemblies, particularly joints and joining assemblies for co-joining composite components and metal components in a joining assembly, and inhibiting corrosion of metal components secured to composite component via a joining assembly.
Monocoque helicopter fuselage with integral tail boom
A composite structure forming a load bearing composite shell for a helicopter, with a shell which defines the exterior of a fuselage and includes a central fuselage section and tail boom, a fuselage which is adapted house an engine or drive train, a layered composite crashworthy seat and support structure and a fastening and a method of fastening by providing an adhesive between two layers which is allowed to flow through opposing holes in the layers to provide a chemical and mechanical attachment between the layers.
ROTARY WING AIRCRAFT WITH A STRUCTURAL ARRANGEMENT THAT COMPRISES AN ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE CONNECTION
A rotary wing aircraft that comprises a structural arrangement with at least one first fiber reinforced polymer component and at least one second fiber reinforced polymer component that are spaced apart from each other by an interspace and that are rigidly attached to an associated structural component, wherein the at least one first fiber reinforced polymer component and the at least one second fiber reinforced polymer component are at least partly interconnected by means of an electrically conductive connection, and wherein the electrically conductive connection comprises at least one sprayed layer of electrically conductive particles, the at least one sprayed layer of electrically conductive particles being provided in the interspace.
BONDING PREPARATION PATCH
A bonding preparation patch for application to a resin treated surface is provided. The patch includes a strip having first and second portions, each of which has corresponding first and second sides. The strip is formed of resin porous material and is foldable such that the respective first sides of the first and second portions face each other. The patch further includes a resin barrier interposable between corresponding portions of the respective first sides and a tape including at least one adhesive side, which is securable relative to the first portion and disposable in contact with the second side of the second portion.
JOINING STRUCTURAL MEMBERS USING FOAM
One aspect of a process of forming an aircraft component includes bonding a first end of a honeycomb structure to a surface of an aircraft skin member, the honeycomb structure including multiple connected cells. Foam is sprayed on a second end of the honeycomb structure opposite the first end. The process also includes curing the foam on the second end of the honeycomb structure.
