This is accomplished by encircling the structure to be protected with a strip of material that is capable of being heated sufficiently that the temperature of its outer surface is high enough that insects or other pests will not come into contact or pass over it and thereby will not enter the structure. Crawling insects that will be prevented from entering a structure include but are not limited to termites, millipedes, ants, and cockroaches.

The actuator can be engaged by a digit of the hand of the user to selectively actuate the pumping unit and the igniter so that a flame is propelled from the nozzle.
