Example embodiments of the present invention include various compositions that include a pH modifier composition and/or a buffering capacity modifier composition. In some examples, the pH modifier compositions include a dose of pH modifier to raise the pH in a patient's mouth from about 1 to about 2 pH levels. The compositions are then incorporated into various confections for oral ingestion or application that allow a patient to easily use the composition with the pH and/or buffering capacity modifiers. For example, compositions with the pH and/or buffering capacity modifiers can be incorporated within chewing gum, tablets, lozenges, breath strips, hard candy, oral sprays, and other confections. Another embodiment of the invention includes a testing device to test the pH and buffering capacity within a patient's mouth.

Disclosed herein is a chewable article for oral mucosa delivery of a composition. The chewable system comprises a chewable base with the composition embedded, coated, integrated or dispersed therein. The composition may be pressurized, oxygenated, and/or atomized. The composition may be released as an aerosol. In one embodiment, the chewable system comprises a pressurized capsule that dissolves or ruptures in the mouth to release a burst of the composition. The chewable system may be configured to allow the composition facing to the buccal mucosa.

The method generally comprises heating the gum base in ovens to melt the gum base. Separately, the active ingredient(s), sweeteners and flavorings are combined in a mixer. The melted gum base is added to the mixer and cools to produce a particulate mixture. As mixing continues the mass cools to room temperature and forms granular pieces. The granular pieces are ground into a powder at room temperature, mixed at room temperature with tableting excipients, and tableted. Several variations on the foregoing are also described.

A releasing agent is atomized and expelled from an expelling device. Application of pressure to the releasing agent is unnecessary to achieve the atomizing. The atomized releasing agent is applied to either a surface of the at least one manufacturing instrument configured to contact the comestible or to a surface of the comestible.

Smoke from the smokable item also may be enhanced with flavor while passing through an inner passageway within the mouthpiece to the user's mouth.
