Banded papers, smoking articles and methods

Wrapper for cigarette manufacture includes transversely extending band regions applied by a printing technique, such as gravure printing. The band regions comprise starch, an anti-wrinkling agent such as 1,2 propylene glycol or glycerin, and optionally calcium carbonate. Any suitable printing technique can be used to apply the aqueous solution to the banded regions. The pattern of banded regions may be bands, stripes, two-dimensional arrays, undulated regions, and the like along and/or around the tobacco rod. The pattern can be applied in one or more layers. The pattern may be configured so that when a smoking article is placed on a substrate, at least two longitudinal locations along the length of the tobacco rod have film-forming compound located only on sides of the smoking article not in contact with the substrate.

Plant metabolism and alkaloid levels can be regulated by transcription factors that regulate the nicotinic alkaloid biosynthetic pathway. In one embodiment, the disclosure provides a transcription factor that negatively regulates alkaloid biosynthesis, such as nicotine biosynthesis.

Nucleic acid sequences encoding transcription factors regulating alkaloid biosynthesis and their use in modifying plant metabolism

Plant metabolism and alkaloid levels can be regulated by transcription factors that regulate the nicotinic alkaloid biosynthetic pathway. In one embodiment, the disclosure provides a transcription factor that positively regulates alkaloid biosynthesis, such as nicotine biosynthesis. In particular, the present disclosure provides methods for the inhibition of Nicotiana benthamiana auxin response factor 1 (NbTF1) to reduce alkaloid biosynthesis in plants.

A smoking article (10) includes a tobacco rod (“rod”) (12) and a mouthpiece (14) secured to a downstream end of the rod (12). The mouthpiece contains: a tubular element (20) defining a longitudinal channel, a downstream segment of filter material (24), and an extinguisher element (22). The tubular element (20) is provided adjacent the downstream end of the rod (12). The downstream segment of filter material (24) is downstream of the tubular element (20) and spaced apart from the tubular element (20) to define a cavity (26) between the tubular element (20) and the downstream segment of filter material (24). The extinguisher element (22) includes: a compressible reservoir (28) provided in the cavity (26) and containing liquid, a neck portion (30) extending upstream from the reservoir (28) and having an open end, and a seal (32) provided over the open end of the neck portion (30). The neck portion (30) is received in the longitudinal channel of the tubular element (20) such that the open end is proximate the downstream end of the rod (12).

Smoking article with extinguishment means

There is provided a smoking article (10) comprising: a tobacco rod (12) comprising a charge (16) of tobacco material circumscribed by a wrapper (18); a filter (14) arranged downstream of the tobacco rod (12); and a hollow tube (20) defining an inner cavity (22) and attaching the filter (14) to the tobacco rod (12). An affixing portion (24) of the tobacco rod (12) is received within the inner cavity (22) and secured to the hollow tube (20) by means of a thermally deactivatable adhesive (26) provided on an outer surface of the wrapper (18) or on an inner surface of the hollow tube (20) or on both. Thus, upon deactivation of the adhesive, at least a portion of the tobacco rod (12) becomes slidable within the hollow tube (20) in relation to the filter (14).
