A spinal stabilization system and method are provided for treating a patient's spinal column, for maintaining preselected spacing and movement between adjacent vertebrae in a spinal column, and for providing overall stability thereto. The system includes an interlaminar member positioned in the space intermediate a first vertebra and the vertebrae positioned immediately below and adjacent to the first vertebra. The interlaminar member is operatively connected to an adjustable support structure and cooperates therewith to maintain the preselected spacing between adjacent vertebrae and to provide overall stability to the spinal column.

A spinous laminar clamp system is disclosed herein. The preferred embodiments are either a three or a four-point fixation system at a particular vertebral level. For example, a two-point adjustable fixation below a vertebrae and a single-point non-adjustable point above the vertebrae exemplifies the three-point fixation. Multiple level and further stabilizing is provided by fixation to subjacent vertebrae above and/or below with a connecting rod providing unitization between levels. Specific designs are applicable to the cervical spine; however, fixation at all levels and regions of the human spine are contemplated.

The system includes an elongate connection element with end portions interconnected by a flexible coupling member. Apparatus and devices for percutaneously extending an existing spinal construct ipsilaterally with an additional spinal construct in a patient are disclosed. The additional spinal construct comprises a rod connector that includes an elongate additional rod integrally attached thereto. The additional rod is placed through an access port in a first orientation generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the access port and rotated to a different second orientation generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the access port. During such rotation the additional rod is moved subcutaneously beneath the skin of the patient from the existing spinal rod to an additional bone engaging implant. In another arrangement, the extension of an existing spinal construct in a minimally invasive procedure comprises a rod connector having an offset support for receiving an additional spinal rod that may be placed laterally interiorly or exteriorly of the existing spinal construct.

The second connector portion may be rotatably connected with the first connector portion and may include a second aperture to receive a second spinal rod. The second connector portion may be L-shaped and may include a set screw to control rotation of the first connector portion with respect to the second connector portion.

One or more rod members can be extended across the central rod holders of the cross-links, thereby forming a stable spinal stabilization system providing bilateral stress distribution across different levels of the spine.
