Ultrasonic surgical instrument with dual modes

A surgical apparatus comprises a body, a shaft assembly, and an end effector. The end effector comprises a clamp arm and an ultrasonic blade in acoustic communication with an ultrasonic transducer via an acoustic waveguide that extends through the shaft assembly. The clamp arm is configured to pivot about a first pivot point toward and away from the ultrasonic blade along a first angular path from a first position to a second position to thereby provide a tissue sealing mode of operation. The clamp arm is further configured to pivot about a second pivot point toward and away from the ultrasonic blade along second angular path from the second position to a third position to thereby provide a tissue cutting and sealing mode of operation. The second pivot point is proximal to the first pivot point.

Tattoo removal using a liquid-gas mixture with plasma gas bubbles

Methods and systems are disclosed for removing a tattoo from a subject's skin by application of a cold plasma that is delivered via a liquid-gas mixture. The plasma can be delivered in the form of gas bubbles, in which at least a portion of gas is in the form of a plasma.

Systems for incising tissue

An elongate electrode is configured to flex and generate plasma to incise tissue. An electrical energy source operatively coupled to the electrode is configured to provide electrical energy to the electrode to generate the plasma. A tensioning element is operatively coupled to the elongate electrode. The tensioning element can be configured to provide tension to the elongate electrode to allow the elongate electrode to flex in response to the elongate electrode engaging the tissue and generating the plasma. The tensioning element operatively coupled to the flexible elongate electrode may allow for the use of a small diameter electrode, such as a 5 μm to 20 μm diameter electrode, which can allow narrow incisions to be formed with decreased tissue damage. In some embodiments, the tensioning of the electrode allows the electrode to more accurately incise tissue by decreasing variations in the position of the electrode along the incision path.

METHODS FOR INCISING TISSUE

An elongate electrode is configured to flex and generate plasma to incise tissue. An electrical energy source operatively coupled to the electrode is configured to provide electrical energy to the electrode to generate the plasma. A tensioning element is operatively coupled to the elongate electrode. Systems and methods of dithering to maintain grasp force include a computer-assisted device. The computer-assisted device includes an instrument having a first jaw and a second jaw configured to grasp a material, one or more actuators configured to actuate the first and second jaws to apply force to the grasped material, and a controller coupled to the one or more actuators. The controller is configured to determine that actuation of the one or more actuators should be dithered and in response to the determination, dither one or more control signals to the one or more actuators so as to cause variations in a force or torque applied by the one or more actuators. In some embodiments, the one or more control signals correspond to a force setpoint, a torque setpoint, a current setpoint, or a position setpoint for the one or more actuators.

Apparatus and methods for resecting and/or ablating an undesired tissue

There is provided herein a catheter for resecting an undesired tissue from a body of a subject, the catheter comprising a tip section in a shape of a cylinder or a cylinder's sector having a central longitudinal axis, the tip section comprising: a central longitudinal lumen; a first set of optical fibers configured to transmit laser radiation outside a distal extremity of the tip section, in a direction parallel to the central longitudinal axis; a second set of optical fibers configured to transmit laser radiation, transversely to the central longitudinal axis; wherein the first set of optical fibers and the second set of optical fibers are selectively operable to resect and/or ablate the undesired tissue.

A flexible shaft having first end and second ends dampen the vibration to the motor and to the operator handle.
