Prophylactic bactericidal medical device

A medical implant system is described for inhibiting infection associated with a joint prosthesis implant. An inventive system includes an implant body made of a biocompatible material which has a metal component disposed on an external surface of the implant body. A current is allowed to flow to the metal component, stimulating release of metal ions toxic to microbes, such as bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and viruses. One detailed system is completely surgically implantable in the patient such that no part of the system is external to the patient while the system is in use. In addition, externally controlled devices are provided which allow for modulation of implanted components.

Devices for therapeutic vascular procedures

Methods and devices for treating a cerebral aneurysm utilize a device that includes a self-expanding resilient permeable shell made from elongate resilient filaments. At least some of the filaments have a distal region that extends beyond the distal end of the permeable shell and form an extension having a generally circular shape when expanded. The permeable shell has a radially constrained elongated state configured for delivery within a microcatheter and has an expanded state with a globular, axially shortened configuration. The permeable shell has a plurality of openings formed between the braided filaments. The distal regions of the plurality of filaments that form the extension may be braided, partially braided, or unraveled. Once deployed within the cerebral aneurysm, the extension may be positioned near a dome of the cerebral aneurysm.

Stent with drug coat layer

A stent able to minimize occurrences of strain and stress concentration in a drug coat layer upon expansive deformation of the stent in a radial direction to avoid the possibility of the drug separating from the stent, includes a stent body and a drug coating layer coated on the outside surface of the stent body so that the thickness of the drug coating layer gradually decreases toward a bent portion of the stent.
