Magnetic probe apparatus
A system and method for locating magnetic material. In one embodiment the system includes a magnetic probe; a power module in electrical communication with the magnetic probe to supply current to the magnetic probe; a sense module in electrical communication with the magnetic probe to receive signals from the magnetic probe; and a computer in electrical communication with the power module and the sense module. The computer generates a waveform that controls the supply of current from the power module and receives a signal from the sense module that indicates the presence of magnetic material. The magnetic probe is constructed from a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion of substantially 10.sup.−6/° C. or less and a Young's modulus of substantially 50 GPa or greater. In one embodiment magnetic nanoparticles are injected into a breast and the lymph nodes collecting the particles are detected with the probe and deemed sentinel nodes.
METHOD FOR QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENT OF GASTRIC ACIDITY USING 13C CARBONATE SALT
The present invention provides a method for measuring the gastric acidity of a mammal using a .sup.13C-labeled carbonate compound. Specifically, the present invention relates to a method for measuring the gastric acidity of a mammal including the following steps:
(1) using, as a test sample, expired air of a mammalian subject excreted at any point in time within 30 minutes after oral administration of a predetermined amount of a .sup.13C-labeled carbonate compound, measuring behavior of .sup.13CO.sub.2 in the expired air;
(2) comparing the behavior of .sup.13CO.sub.2 (measured .sup.13CO.sub.2 behavior) obtained in step (1) with the behavior of corresponding .sup.13CO.sub.2 (reference .sup.13CO.sub.2 behavior) that has been obtained beforehand in a control mammal; and
(3) determining the gastric acidity of the mammalian subject based on a difference between the reference .sup.13CO.sub.2 behavior and the measured .sup.13CO.sub.2 behavior obtained above.
MAGNETIC NANOPARTICLE, HAVING A CURIE TEMPERATURE WHICH IS WITHIN BIOCOMPATIBLE TEMPERATURE RANGE, AND METHOD FOR PREPARING SAME
The present invention relates to a magnetic nanoparticle having a Curie temperature which is within a biocompatible temperature range, a method for preparing same, and a nanocomposite and a target substance detection composition comprising the magnetic nanoparticle. As the magnetic nanoparticle of the present invention has a Curie temperature within the temperature range of 0 degrees centigrade to 41 degrees centigrade, the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic properties of the magnetic nanoparticle may be controlled within a biocompatible temperature range at a temperature at which a biological control agent is not destroyed, and the temperature of the magnetic nanoparticle is adjusted to control the magnetic properties thereof such that the properties of the magnetic nanoparticle may be used only when ferromagnetic properties are required, such as in the case of signal amplification in detecting, separating, and delivering biological control agents. Accordingly, the magnetic nanoparticle of the present invention can minimize adverse effects of ferromagnetic properties thereof, and can be used in the effective detection and separation of biological control agents.

The invention relates to novel biocompatible hybrid nanoparticles of very small size, useful in particular for diagnostics and/or therapy.
The purpose of the invention is to offer novel nanoparticles which are useful in particular as contrast agents in imaging (e.g. MRI) and/or in other diagnostic techniques and/or as therapeutic agents, which give better performance than the known nanoparticles of the same type and which combine both a small size (for example less than 20 nm) and a high loading with metals (e.g. rare earths), in particular so as to have, in imaging (e.g. MRI), strong intensification and a correct response (increased relaxivity) at high frequencies. The method for the production of these nanoparticles and the applications thereof in imaging and in therapy also form part of the invention.
MONOCLONAL ANTIBODY FOR THE DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT AND/OR PREVENTION OF BRAIN TUMORS AND BRAIN LESIONS
The invention relates to the use of the monoclonal antibody NILO1 for the diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of brain tumors and lesions. Particularly, the invention relates to methods for the diagnosis of brain tumors and brain lesions in which cells marked with said antibody, or with immunologically active fragments thereof, are detected. The invention also relates to the use of said monoclonal antibody, or immunologically active fragments thereof, as a medicament for the treatment and/or prevention of brain tumors and brain lesions. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the monoclonal antibody NILO1, or its immunologically active fragments, are humanized.
