Board game system and method

A board game system comprises a game board, having a surface adapted to receive a board game overlay, a detector array adapted to detect the respective positions of a plurality of game pieces placed on top of the board game overlay, and a transmitter adapted to transmit data indicating the respective positions to an entertainment device; and an entertainment device, having a receiver adapted to receive from the game board data indicating the respective positions of the plurality of game pieces, a game state analyser operable to update the state of a game in dependence upon the indicated respective positions of the plurality of game pieces, and an image generator operable to generate an image for output to a display, the content of the image being responsive to the detected state of the game.

An electromagnetic game board includes a configurable grid of electromagnets under a game board to move game pieces on the board. Alternative to electromagnets is acoustic levitation through soundwave. In an oscillating electric field (four sides), a magnet can create excite ultrasound that quickly contract and rebound its original shape to push out pulses of air.

A hexagonal board game that is arranged in a pattern that is similar to a honeycomb. The board game consists of 37 tiles wherein 16 of the tiles have a first pattern, 15 of the tiles have a second pattern and 6 of the tiles have a third pattern. The tiles having the first pattern define three distinct linear paths in which each path has a set of landing spots within the paths. The tiles having the second pattern define two distinct linear paths in which each path has a set of landing spots within the paths and two paths that go nowhere. The tiles having the third pattern have a path that connects all sides. Yet the tiles have a blockade in the central axis point of the tiles. The first, second and third pattern tiles are set on the frame of the board game in a specific manner. The board game has a plurality of game pieces and includes a pair of dice. Players are given instructions as to how to traverse the board game, with their individual game pieces, from one side to the other in order to win the game.

Removal of game pieces or tiles from the recesses of a game board surface having a raised grid to prevent sliding of the game pieces on the board is facilitated by providing, in one embodiment, a flexible game board which can be bent into a generally U-shaped structure to form a funnel to deposit the game pieces into a receptacle by funneling action. An alternative embodiment provides for pivotably mounted full boards or portions of boards which are rotated on their pivots to deposit the game pieces in a receptacle forming the frame for the structure. Another embodiment provides a grid with a slot under it for receiving a smooth-surfaced marked game board surface under the grid. The game board can be pulled out from under the grid to let game pieces fall down into a receptacle.
