Apparatuses and methods are provided for applying accelerated electrons to a gaseous medium by means of an electron beam generator, which has at least one cathode for emitting electrons and at least one electron exit window, wherein a) the at least one cathode is annular and the at least one electron exit window is in the form of an annular first hollow cylinder, the annular electron exit window in the form of the first hollow cylinder forms an inner wall of an annular housing of the electron beam generator, wherein the electrons emitted by the cathode are accelerated to the ring axis of the annular housing; b) an annular second hollow cylinder is arranged within the electron exit window in the form of the first hollow cylinder and delimits an annular space between the first hollow cylinder and the second hollow cylinder; c) a cooling gas is fed through the annular space between the first hollow cylinder and the second hollow cylinder; and d) the gaseous medium to which accelerated electrons are to be applied is fed through the second hollow cylinder.

According to one aspect there is provided apparatus for electron irradiation scrubbing, said apparatus comprising: an anode; a cathode a nanostructure located between said anode and said cathode, said nanostructure being configured to field-emit electrons in response to the presence of an electric field between the anode and cathode when a potential difference is established therebetween; and a housing coupled to said nanostructure and configured for locating the nanostructure so that it extends into a container containing gas to be scrubbed such that an interior of said container can be exposed to said electrons. A system for neutralizing exhaust gases from an aircraft at altitude includes a turbofan jet engine. The turbofan jet engine creates exhaust gases. An exhaust is located within the turbofan jet engine. The exhaust has an interior volume. At least one corona discharge unit is located within the interior volume of the exhaust. The at least one corona discharge unit creates electrical discharges comprising high-speed relativistic electrons and gamma rays within the exhaust. The exhaust gases and the electrical discharges are directed to interact with one another in the interior volume of the exhaust. The interaction generates positively charged plasma ions within the exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are neutralized before leaving the turbofan jet engine.

A process for direct compression of hydrogen separated from a hydrocarbon source is described herein. The process comprises a first zone wherein a hydrocarbon reaction that produce hydrogen occurs, a ceramic proton conductor which under an applied electric field transport hydrogen from said first zone to said second zone, and a second zone where compressed hydrogen is produced. The heat energy generated by ohmic resistance in the membrane is partially recuperated as chemical energy in the hydrocarbon reforming process to generate hydrogen.

Self-power air refresher system

A self-power air refresher system includes an air refresher apparatus and a plant microbial fuel cell (PMFC). The air refresher apparatus includes a fan, a filter located on an air-outlet path of the fan, and an energy storage device connected to the fan. The PMFC is disposed on the air-outlet path and includes soil contained in a container, a plant planted in the soil, and a first and second electrodes. The interaction between roots of the plant and microorganisms near the roots generates electrons, and the electrons are transmitted to the energy storage device through the first and second electrodes installed in the soil so as to enable the energy storage device to supply power to the fan. The air that has passed through the filter enters the soil of the PMFC, and is filtered by the plant and then discharged from the container.
