A nucleic acid amplification method includes a step of heating a first region of a container housing a droplet containing a target nucleic acid and a sample necessary for amplification of the target nucleic acid to a denaturation temperature of the target nucleic acid and heating a second region different from the first region to a synthesis temperature of the target nucleic acid, and an amplification step of repeating a cycle through a denaturation stage at which the droplet housed in the container is moved to and retained in the first region and a synthesis stage at which the droplet is moved to and retained in the second region at a plurality of times. At the amplification step, periods of part of cycles of the plurality of cycles are made shorter than periods of the other cycles.

Device for use in fluid sample analysis

The present invention relates to a device (10) for use in fluid sample analysis. It is described to position (310) a top part (20) of the device (10) adjacent to a base part (30) of the device so as to define a fluidic receiving region in between, the top part being provided with a through opening fluidly connected to the fluidic receiving region, and the bottom part being provided with a radiation window adjacent to the fluidic receiving region. A fluidic sample is supplied (320) through the opening (24). The fluidic sample is moved laterally (330) in the fluid receiving region without the use of an intermediary membrane between the top part and the base part. A radiation is emitted (340) to the fluid receiving region. A radiation is detected (350) that is reflected by the device. A presence of the fluidic sample is determined (360) on the basis of a measured reflectance value based on the detected radiation.

Velvet disease infestation is detected using affinity reagents that are cross-reactive with one or more A. ocellatum or P. pillulare antigens. The analysis may be performed shipboard, dockside, in an aquaculture or aquarium setting, otherwise in situ at the point of sample collection or elsewhere. The results may be used to monitor health and disease of captured or cultured fish species or the safety of water to be introduced into an aquaculture facility.

Power-compensated fusion furnace

A power-compensated fusion furnace includes a power control system having one switching device per heating element, power measurement circuitry, a master temperature sensor, and a controller. Each switching device is electrically connected to a respective heating element. The controller, in conjunction with the switching devices, is able to individually control the electrical energy flowing to each heating element, thereby controlling the duty cycle of each heating element. The duty cycles are corrected for one or more of: variations in the electrical resistance of each heating element and position-dependent variations in furnace cavity temperature.
