A device for applying viscous material to workpieces includes a rotary lance in a holder apparatus and rotatable about a longitudinally-extending rotation axis, the lance having at least one material outlet. A needle valve associated with each material outlet has a longitudinally-extending valve needle used to close each material outlet on a valve seat. Each valve needle has an associated cylinder with a plunger chamber in which a plunger is movable by pressure applied by a fluid, the valve needle being permanently connected to the plunger. A tappet is connected to each plunger, the tappet, at its upper end facing away from the at least one valve seat, being sealingly guided out of the associated plunger chamber. The rotary lance has a measuring element which can be acted upon by the tappet and moved longitudinally; and the holder apparatus has a sensor for determining the measuring element position.

Provided is an application method including: a feeding step including feeding a viscous material to a discharge member; a temperature measurement step including measuring a temperature of the viscous material in a flow path through which the viscous material is fed to the discharge member; a pressurizing step including pressurizing the viscous material fed to the discharge member, based on the temperature measured in the temperature measurement step; and a discharge step including discharging, through the discharge member, the viscous material pressurized in the pressurizing step.

The cylinders are arranged one behind the other longitudinally and the piston rod of at least one of the cylinders is guided in a sealed manner through the piston chamber of at least one further cylinder arranged closer on the valve seats.

One end of the spring fixedly engages the first protrusion ring and the other end of the spring fixedly engages the second protrusion so that the spring keeps the spring column at least partially inside the spring-limiting column. The spring biases the lower end of the spring column toward the needle.

The valve stem is disposed in the housing and has a first configuration, in which the liquid is allowed to exit the housing, and a second configuration, in which the liquid is prevented from exiting the housing. The control valve receives pressurized air from a pressurized air source. The control valve has a first position, in which the pressurized air acts on the valve stem to move the valve stem to the first configuration or to the second configuration, and a second position, in which the pressurized air is moved out of the dispensing assembly through an exhaust passage defined therein.

In one embodiment, the nozzle body has a discharge orifice sized smaller than the outer diameter of the expansion chamber for accelerating liquid flow upon discharge sufficient to enhance consistent and repeatable breaks in the cyclically controlled fluid flow stream for enabling the discharge of smaller and more consistent volumes.
