Methods of manufacturing hypoid gears
A method of manufacturing a hypoid gear includes face hobbing a gear blank and forming a green hypoid gear with gear teeth, heat treating the green hypoid gear to form a heat treated hypoid gear with heat treated gear teeth, and hard hobbing the heat treated gear teeth to form a hard finished hypoid gear. Critical non-tooth features on the heat treated hypoid gear are hard finished. Also, the critical non-tooth features on the heat treated hypoid gear can be hard finished prior to hard hobbing the heat treated gear teeth. The heat treating includes at least one of carburizing and induction hardening the green hypoid gear, a surface of the heat treated gear teeth has a hardness greater than or equal to 58 HRC, and the hard hobbing removes heat distortion from the heat treated gear teeth.

Indexable tangential railway wheel milling inserts and cutting tool holders
Railway wheel milling tool system including a railway wheel truing cutters and tangential railway wheel milling inserts are disclosed. The tangential milling inserts have at least four indexable cutting edges, each with a central wiper cutting edge segment between two convex cutting edge segments. The milling inserts may allow both the flat portion and curved portion of a railway wheel to be machined with an improved surface finish. The railway wheel truing cutters comprise a plurality of insert pockets structured and arranged to receive the tangential railway wheel milling inserts.

Hollow gear hob
A hob for a cutting apparatus including a hollow body of a sintered hard metal composition and a cavity located within the body, the cavity having a volume in the range of about 10% to about 90% of the volume of the body.

AXIAL HOB WITH MULTI-REVOLUTION CUTTING TEETH
An axial hob (14) with cutting teeth (16) which are arranged around a cylinder (19) in a helical pattern. The cutting front (18) is perpendicular to the helix. The re-grindable blade thickness is oriented in the direction of the helix lead direction. While the tool rotates, the active cutting front changes from one blade to the next which, depending on the hand of rotation, is an advanced or retracted position. However, the rotation will not give the individual blades a chip removing motion but only position the following blade in an advanced or retracted location, such as in a gear slot to be machined.

METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING SINTERED GEAR
A method for manufacturing a sintered gear comprising the steps of: preparing a cylindrical green compact; gear-cutting the green compact with a hob; and sintering the gear-hobbed green compact, wherein the hob is such that a ratio of a number of cutting edges thereof per round to a number of starts thereof exceeds 8.
