ELECTRON BEAM WELDING
A method of electron beam welding comprising splitting the output of an electron beam welder into two components, a pre/post heat ring and a fusion spot, applying the two outputs to a workpiece that is to be welded, traversing the two outputs along the desired weld path, and wherein the fusion spot lies within the pre/post heat ring and travels in tandem with and inside the pre/post heat ring. The pre/post heat ring may be annular. The fusion spot may be located at the centre of the pre/post heat ring. The output of the electron beam welder may comprise 1 to 100,000 discrete points. The beams may be deflected using the EB welder deflector coils. The time the electron beam spends on each discrete point may be identical.

An additive manufacturing apparatus utilizing combined electron beam selective melting and electron beam cutting. One electron beam emitting, focusing, and scanning device (6) is capable of emitting electron beams (67, 68) in three modes of heating, selective melting, and electron beam cutting. The electron beam in the heating mode is emitted to scan and preheat a powder bed (7). The electron beam (67) in the selective melting mode is emitted to scan and melt powder (71) in a section outline to form a section layer of a component. The electron beam (68) in the electron beam cutting mode is emitted to perform one or more cutting scans on inner and outer outlines (74, 75) of a section of the component to obtain accurate and smooth inner and outer outlines of the section. The heating, melting deposition, and outline cutting processes are repeated to obtain a required three-dimensional physical component.

An additive manufacturing device utilizing an electron beam and laser integrated scanning comprises: a vacuum generating chamber (1); a worktable means having a forming region at least provided in the vacuum generating chamber (1); a powder supply means configured to supply a powder to the forming region; an electron-beam emission focusing and scanning means (6) and an laser-beam emission focusing and scanning means (7) configured in such a manner that a scanning range of the electron-beam emission focusing and scanning means (6) and a scanning range of the laser-beam emission focusing and scanning means (7) cover at least a part of the forming region; and a controller configured to control the electron-beam emission focusing and scanning means (6) and the laser-beam emission focusing and scanning means (7) to perform a powder integrated-scanning and forming treatment on the forming region.

A method of additively manufacturing includes determining a track for manufacturing a layer of a component with a powder blend; traversing the track with a conditioning energy beam to cause sintering of powder particles along a denuded region within the powder blend; and traversing the track with a melting energy beam subsequent to the conditioning energy beam to from the layer of the component. An additive manufacturing system includes a build chamber that contains a powder blend; a controller operable to determine a track for manufacturing a layer of a component with the powder blend in the build chamber; a conditioning energy beam directed along the track by the controller to cause sintering of powder particles along a denuded region within the powder blend; and a melting energy beam directed along the track by the controller subsequent to the conditioning energy beam to form the layer of the component.

To provide a three-dimensional printing device that irradiates approximately the same ranges on the surface of a powder layer simultaneously with a plurality of electron beams having different beam shapes. An electron beam column 200 of the three-dimensional printing device 100 includes a plurality of electron sources 20 including electron sources having anisotropically-shaped beam generating units, and beam shape deforming elements 30 that deform the beam shapes of electron beams output from the electron sources 20 on a surface 63 of a powder layer 62. A deflector 50 included in the electron beam column 200 deflects an electron beam output from each of the plurality of electron sources 20 by a distance larger than the beam space between electron beams before passing through the deflector 50.
System and method for monitoring and controlling build quality during electron beam manufacturing
A system and method for monitoring and controlling build quality during electron beam manufacturing of a build part. The system may include at least one electron beam source to direct at least one electron beam onto a plurality of deposited layers of metallic powder to form a melt pool, a detector to detect in real-time backscattered energy ejected from the melt pool and indicative of a defect in the build part and generate a detection signal representative of the defect. A controller receives and analyzes the detection signal and generates a corrective signal for control of at least one of the actuator and the at least one electron beam source to direct the at least one electron beam onto the plurality of deposited layers of metallic powder to sequentially consolidate patterned portions of the plurality of deposited metallic powder layers to adaptively form the three-dimensional build part.

A method for producing three-dimensional objects layer by layer using a powdery material which can be solidified by irradiating it with at least two electron beams, said method comprises a pre-heating step, wherein the pre-heating step comprises the sub-step of scanning a pre-heating powder layer area (100) by scanning a first electron beam in a first region (I) and by scanning a second electron beam in a second region (II) distributed over the pre-heating powder layer area (100), wherein consecutively scanned paths are separated by, at least, a security distance (ΔY), said sub-step further comprising the step of synchronising the preheating of said first and second electron beams when simultaneously preheating said powder material within said first and second regions respectively, so that said first and second electron beams are always separated to each other with at least a minimum security distance (ΔX).

Electron beam additive manufacturing
A method and apparatus particularly for additively manufacturing materials that are susceptible to hot cracking. The additive manufacturing process may include a leading energy beam (16) for liquefying a raw material to form a melt pool (20), and a trailing energy beam (17) directed toward a trailing region of the melt pool. The trailing energy beam may be configured to enhance agitation and/or redistribution of liquid in the melt pool to prevent hot cracking, reduce porosity, or improve other characteristics of the solidified part. The method and apparatus also may improve processing parameters, such as adjusting vacuum level to prevent volatilization of alloying agents, or providing a chill plate to control interpass temperature. The process may be used to form new articles, and also may be used to enhance tailorability and flexibility in design or repair of pre-existing articles, among other considerations.
