Fuel cartridge for a gas-powered fixing tool and a gas-powered fixing tool having such a cartridge

Various embodiments of the present disclosure provide a fuel cartridge for a gas-powered fastener-driving tool. In one embodiment, the fuel cartridge comprises a body that has a longitudinal axis and that defines an internal fuel storage cavity. The body is shaped and sized to be inserted at least partially into and removed from a housing defined by a case of the tool via translation along the longitudinal axis. The cartridge also includes a connection and fuel dispensing end fitting connected to the body and sized and shaped to engage an end fitting of the tool within the housing. The cartridge also includes a first cam surface extending at least partially around the longitudinal axis and configured to, during relative rotation of the first cam surface and a second cam surface, engage the second cam surface to facilitate removal of the fuel cartridge from the housing.

An improved tool for installing an explosively driven fastener as well as an improved explosively driven fastener for use therewith are disclosed. The fastener includes a nail having a head with an explosive load attached thereto in a plastic cap that includes a buffer. The tool has a plurality of concentric cylinders and springs including a muzzle for receiving the fastener head and explosive load. A spring actuated firing pin ignites the load causing it to explode and drive the nail out of the tool. The explosion also automatically resets the tool. The tool and the fastener provide many advantages over existing explosively driven fasteners and the tools used to install them.

A fastener gun or nail gun utilizes a propellant cartridge having a centerfire primer made from thermite. The thermite is made from alternating layers of metal oxide and reducing metal, and includes one or more layers of carbide-containing ceramic. The primer ignites a propellant which may be a conventional single base or double base smokeless powder, or which may be thermite having a structure similar to the thermite of the primer. The primer may be initiated mechanically or electrically. The fastener gun is capable of applying a level of force similar to the force applied by conventional propellant cartridges, while avoiding inhalation of lead particles by the operator of the fastener gun.

A powder-driven connecting tool for connecting power lines is disclosed, as are assemblies and replacement parts for such a tool. The tool includes a tool head with an anvil, and a power unit with a ram. A breech cap assembly connects to the power unit and includes a sleeve threaded on both ends and a cap threadedly mounted on one end of the sleeve. The sleeve and cap define a breech for a powder charge. An adapter is mounted on an outer end surface of the cap. The adapter is narrower than the cap itself and is adapted to be driven by a power tool in order to tighten and loosen the cap and the sleeve. The adapter may, for example, have the form of a hex nut.
