In accordance with at least certain embodiments, a multilayer dry process polyethylene/polypropylene/polyethylene microporous separator which is manufactured using the inventive process which includes machine direction stretching followed by transverse direction stretching and a subsequent calendaring step as a means to reduce the thickness of the multilayer microporous membrane, to reduce the percent porosity of the multilayer microporous membrane in a controlled manner and/or to improve transverse direction tensile strength. In a very particular embodiment, the inventive process produces a thin multilayer microporous membrane that is easily coated with polymeric-ceramic coatings, has excellent mechanical strength properties due to its polypropylene layer or layers and a thermal shutdown function due to its polyethylene layer or layers. The ratio of the thickness of the polypropylene and polyethylene layers in the inventive multilayer microporous membrane can be tailored to balance mechanical strength and thermal shutdown properties.
METHOD FOR SURFACE STRUCTURING
A method for producing a component with a surface that is suitable for plastic welding or adhesive bonding of two parts is provided. As a preparation step prior to joining, a filler sheet comprising a thermoplastic material or adhesive is arranged on a first surface of a first component and a structuring tool is arranged on the filler sheet. Mechanical force is applied to the structuring tool and heat is applied to the filler sheet such that the filler sheet is attached to the first surface of the first component and such that the structuring tool is partially embedded in the filler sheet. The structuring tool is subsequently removed from the filler sheet to produce a plurality of protrusions in the outer surface of the filler sheet. After surface structuring the first and second components are joined using any type of welding technique or joined using of adhesive bonding.
Storage bag
A method of making a storage bag comprising the following steps performed in any order: (a) forming a composite tube having an inner surface comprising a higher melting polymer, an outer surface comprising a lower melting polymer, two ends, and a diameter; (b) flattening the tube in a direction perpendicular to the diameter; (c) forming a joint at one of the ends at a temperature between respective melting points of the higher melting polymer and the lower melting polymer; (d) providing a composite sheet having a first side comprising a higher melting polymer and a second side comprising a lower melting polymer; and (e) disposing the composite sheet over the joint such that the first side comprising a lower melting polymer engages the joint and forming a lap seam over the joint at a temperature between respective melting points of the higher melting polymer and the lower melting polymer, and a storage bag made by such method.
Membranes, calendered microporous membranes, battery separators, and related methods
Novel or improved microporous single or multilayer battery separator membranes, separators, batteries including such membranes or separators, methods of making such membranes, separators, and/or batteries, and/or methods of using such membranes, separators and/or batteries are provided. In accordance with at least certain embodiments, a multilayer dry process polyethylene/polypropylene/polyethylene microporous separator which is manufactured using the inventive process which includes machine direction stretching followed by transverse direction stretching and a subsequent calendering step as a means to reduce the thickness of the multilayer microporous membrane, to reduce the percent porosity of the multilayer microporous membrane in a controlled manner and/or to improve transverse direction tensile strength. PACKAGING UNIT AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING SEALED PACKAGES CONTAINING A POURABLE FOOD PRODUCT
A packaging unit for producing sealed packages from a tube fed along a first direction and comprising one pair of jaws, which grip the tube along transverse sections, defining respective second directions crosswise to the first direction; sealing means, which seal transverse sections to form sealed packages; separating means for separating packages from the tube along transverse sections and comprising one knife movably supported by one jaw; driving means moving the knife with respect to the jaw along a plane crosswise to the first direction and between a resting position, in which a cutting edge of the knife is spaced from the tube and is aligned with the respective second direction defined by the transverse section to be cut, and an operating position, in which the knife has completely cut the tube at the transverse section; driving means move the cutting edge obliquely with respect to the second direction when said driving means move the knife from the resting position to the operating position; cutting edge contacts the transverse section along a cutting surface parallel to the second direction and increasing as the knife moves from the resting position to the operating position.
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR APPLYING AN ANNULAR BODY TO A PERIMETER FLANGE OF A CONTAINER
An apparatus for applying a cellulose-based annular body to a perimeter flange of a container includes a supporting unit and an operating unit. The supporting unit has a seat to receive a body of the container and is surrounded by an annular portion on which the annular body and the flange rest, such that the annular body is interposed between the annular portion and the flange. A heating device heat the annular body. The supporting unit includes an annular recess, surrounding the annular portion, to at least partly house an annular end bead of the flange. The apparatus includes a forming device, movable along a respective axis of movement between a far position and an engaging position. In the engaging position, the forming device engages and deforms the annular bead pushing said annular bead into the annular recess.

INTERNAL TENSIONING STRUCTURE USEABLE WITH INFLATABLE DEVICES
An internal tensioning structure for use in an inflatable product fulfills the basic function of maintaining two adjacent inflatable surfaces in a desired geometric arrangement when the inflatable product is pressurized. The tensioning structure is formed by connecting a pair of plastic strips sheets via spaced-apart strands, such as strings or wires. When pulled taut, the strands provide a high tensile strength between the two opposed plastic strips. At the same time, the plastic strips facilitate a strong, long-lasting weld between the tensioning structure and the inflatable product.
