One fusion machine can butt or socket fuse polyolefin pipes and fittings in straight alignment or at inwardly or outwardly mitered universal angles from 0° to 45° for butt fusion and from 0° to 10° for socket fusion. A strapping band (4) is first guided about at least one packaging piece, tightened, and equipped with a closure at band ends (4a, 4b) to be connected in a closure unit (1). One or more closure parameters are detected by means of the control unit (8) using the sensor (7), and the closure unit (1) is correspondingly actuated. In response to the predetermined condition being satisfied, the motion control system causes the welding stack to move in accordance with a weld profile.

To provide a corresponding ultrasonic processing apparatus which allows a greater processing speed it is proposed according to the invention that the force sensor is a piezoelectric sensor whose output is converted into an electrical voltage by means of a charge amplifier and that there is provided a control device which either when the ultrasonic processing is not performing material processing short-circuits the piezoelectric sensor or adds a time-varying force compensation unit to the value measured by the piezoelectric sensor.
