A feedstock configured for use in an extruder in an additive manufacturing system is configured as a braided comingled tow filament. A method of producing the braided comingled tow filament includes providing a bundle of comingled tow material having a fiber count ranging from about 1,000 fibers to about 25,000 fibers having thermoplastic fibers comingled therewith, wherein the tow material in the filament ranges from about 50 to 75 volume percent and the volume percent of the thermoplastic material ranges from about 25 volume percent to about 50 volume percent. The method includes dividing the length of comingled tow material into sections, twisting each section into a strand to form a plurality of strands of twisted tow material, and braiding together the strands.

Composite Continuous Filament for Additive Manufacturing

A composite filament for use in additive manufacturing such as fused filament fabrication is described along with methods of its construction and use. The composite filament includes a single continuous filament (e.g., a continuous carbon roving) and a polymer (e.g., a high glass transition polymer) in intimate contact. The composite filament is formed through immersion of the continuous filament in a solution of the polymer. The composite filament can be combined with an additional formation material in an additive manufacturing process.

There is provided a lay-up head for applying elongate fibre reinforcement material to an application surface. The lay-up head comprises a support head having a transverse axis, a dispensing mechanism carried by the support head for dispensing elongate fibre reinforcement material, and a roller for pressing elongate fibre composite material against the application surface. The roller is tiltable with respect to the support head such that the roller axis can be angled with respect to the transverse axis of support head. The lay-up head also comprises a holding mechanism operable to hold the roller in a central position in which the roller axis is parallel to the transverse axis of the support head.

METHOD AND DEVICE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A PLASTIC PROFILE

Straight plastic profiles from a plastics material and a continuous reinforcement are predominantly produced continuously in a strand, usually by the pultrusion method. As the plastic profile is pulled through a mold, only straight plastic profiles are formed in known pultrusion methods. In the production of plastic profiles using semi-finished products or complex fibrous constructions, congestion of the fibrous constructions or of the semi-finished products, and thus solidification of the material, may arise when entering the mold, such that the process has to be stopped. A method and a device for the simple production of individually molded plastic profiles is provided in that the mold is formed from at least two mold parts that in relation to the cross section of the plastic profile are split and are moved in a temporally offset manner counter to a production direction of the plastic profile along a portion of the plastic profile.
