A photoluminescent writing pad, wherein a) the writing pad is fastened to a back cover of a notebook and arranged to be turned to a writing pad of a page of the notebook, b) the writing pad is arranged to gleam through a writing page thus enabling reading and writing in darkness and c) the writing pad has notches for accommodating a spiral wire, especially spiral or wire or similar binding, of a notebook for securing the writing pad under the page of the notebook to function as an interleaf.

A book made up of pages is described. At least some of the pages contain both space for manually-created visual content, and instances of preprinted indexing target symbols. Each of the indexing target symbol instances has at least a portion within one inch of three unbound page edges. Attachment systems, components, and methods are described herein that use a combination of attachment, anchor, or retention mechanisms to secure components to one another. By one approach, a combination of flap, swing clip, and notch features incorporated into one or more devices to provide the ability to attach or combine devices of multiple formats. In some configurations, the attachment systems include a device with at least one panel having a flap and a swing clip on a free edge thereof. The attachment systems also may include at least one attachable device having at least one panel with a notch formed on a free edge thereof. The attachable devices may be attached to each other in a configuration where the notch is aligned with the flap and the swing clip is in a closed position such that the notch and the flap are nested within the swing clip.

A system that combines an integrated circuit, sensors, and a detectable material on a device. The sensors are generally capable of detecting the presence of multiple substrates as well as their orientation relative to each other. In example embodiments, the sensors can also detect the velocity and direction of motion of the detectable material. In an example mode of use, the system is installed in a children's device, such as an interactive book. The detectable material is embedded in each page of the book such that the sensors can determine which page the book is open to the user. The integrated circuit can process the page open information to produce an output, such as a sound from a speaker.

A writing system that includes a reusable notebook including a sheet having a working surface. The working surface includes a printed code including an operative control. The writing system includes a writing instrument configured to capture images of the printed code and a computing device configured to communicate with the reusable notebook and/or the writing instrument. The sheet includes a porous surface located in the working surface. A writing material of the writing instrument comprises solid particles having a particle size greater than a porosity of the porous surface.
