Method for the treatment of single-filament polyethylene terephthalate cords for the reinforcing layers of a pneumatic tyre comprising (a) an adhesive solution coating step, wherein the single filament cord is immersed in an adhesive solution; (b) a drying step, wherein the cord covered in adhesive resin is held within a drying oven at a temperature of between 120 and 180° C.; and (c) a thermobonding step wherein the cord, proceeding from the drying step, is arranged within an oven at a temperature of between 230 and 260° C. for a period of between 30 and 90 seconds. During the thermobonding step, the single filament cord is subjected to a tension of between 8 and 12 mN/dtex.

A tyre for vehicle wheels comprises a support structure and a tread band arranged in a radially outer position with respect to the support structure. The support structure comprises at least one reinforcing layer including a plurality of hybrid reinforcing cords (10′) each having a metallic wire (21) twisted together with a multifilament textile yarn (22) comprising a plurality of filaments (23). In any cross section of each of said hybrid reinforcing cords (10′), the metallic wire (21) is at least partially embedded in the filaments (23) of the multifilament textile yarn (22).

The present invention relates to a self-supporting tire for vehicle wheels comprising a carcass structure comprising at least one carcass ply having a plurality of hybrid reinforcing cords (10) each comprising at least two strands (20) twisted to each other with a predetermined stranding pitch (P), wherein each of said at least two strands (20) comprises at least one monofilament textile thread (21) at least partially embedded in the filaments (22a) of at least one multifilament textile yarn (22) and a pair of sidewall reinforcement inserts (113), where at least one of said sidewall reinforcement inserts comprises a vulcanised elastomeric compound which has a dynamic shear modulus value G equal to or less than 1.25 MPa measured at 70° C., 10 Hz, 9% deformation according to the RPA method reported in the present description.

The cut/puncture resistant breaker layer is formed of monofilaments inclined at between about 0 degrees and about 10 degrees relative to an equatorial plane of the tire.

A ply (16, 18) comprises metallic monofilaments (46′, 46″). Each monofilament (46′) of a first group has a positive torsional elastic deformation in a first direction about its main axis (G). Each monofilament (46″) of a second group has a negative torsional elastic deformation in a second direction about its main axis (G). The absolute value of the torsional elastic deformation C of each monofilament (46′, 46″) is such that |C|≤6 turns per ten metres. The mean S of the torsional elastic deformations of the monofilaments (46′, 46″) of the ply (16, 18) is such that −0.25 turn per ten metres≤S≤+0.25 turn per ten metres. The monofilaments (46′, 46″) are arranged next to one another so as to alternate one or more monofilaments (46′) of the first group with one or more monofilaments (46″) of the second group.

In an elastomer-metal cord composite (10), a metal cord (2) composed of a bundle of plural metal filaments (1) that are arranged in a single row without being twisted together is coated with an elastomer (3). A gap is provided between adjacent metal filaments, and when the diameter of the metal filaments is defined as D (mm), a gap amount, which is a distance between the surfaces of the adjacent metal filaments that is measured in a direction orthogonal to an extending direction of the metal cord, is defined as G (mm), and the number of metal filaments constituting the metal cord is defined as N (filaments), the elastomer-metal cord composite (10) satisfies a relationship expressed by the following Formula (1): 0.45≤[(D/2).sup.2×π×N]/{D×[D×N+G×(N−1)]}≤0.77 (1) wherein, D and G>0, and N is an integer.
