An electro-pneumatic service and emergency braking control system is described, comprising: a switching device arranged to allow the connection of a first group of control and feedback signals from an emergency braking control module to an electro-pneumatic emergency braking module when a monitoring device determines the correct operation of the emergency braking control module and to allow the connection of a third group of control and feedback signals from the service braking control module to the electro-pneumatic emergency braking module when the monitoring device determines the incorrect operation of the emergency braking control module.

An automatic braking system and method are provided for controlling the automatic operation of a pneumatic (air) brake system installed on commercial highway vehicles and the like, particular heavy trucks and buses. When a possible collision is detected or an object is detected in proximity to at least one side and/or end of the vehicle, the system automatically operates the existing, factory installed air braking system of the vehicle to avoid a collision or mitigate the collision impact by concurrently pressurizing each of the rear and front pneumatic service brakes of the vehicle. Pressing the existing vehicle brake pedal deactivates the automatic braking system, thereby permitting the driver to take over control of braking at any time.

When an impending collision signal is received, an activation component operates valves to pressurize the rear brakes to 40 psi. When the air pressure at the rear brakes rises to 20 psi, other valves pressurize the front brakes. This first stage automatic operation stops or slows the vehicle with 40 psi on the rear brakes and 20 psi on the front brakes. When an imminent collision signal is received, the activation component opens valves to pressurize the rear brakes to 120 psi. Once the air pressure at the rear brakes rises to 20 psi, the front brakes are also pressurized. This second stage automatic operation stops the vehicle with 120 psi on the rear brakes and 80 psi on the front brakes, unless restricted to a lower pressure by the brake system manufacturer. The driver can deactivate the automatic braking functions by stepping on the brake pedal or by operating the vehicle turn signals.

The pneumatic delivery port is adapted to transmit a pneumatic fluid, based on the at least one of the received electronic control signal and the received pneumatic control signal, from a second independent source to control i) a second associated service brake and ii) delivery of the pneumatic fluid from a first independent source to control a first associated service brake.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR BRAKING A VEHICLE

A valve includes at least one of an electrical port adapted to receive an electronic control signal and a pneumatic control port adapted to receive a pneumatic control signal. The valve also includes a pneumatic delivery port. The pneumatic delivery port is adapted to transmit a pneumatic fluid, based on the at least one of the received electronic control signal and the received pneumatic control signal, from a second independent source to control i) a second associated service brake and ii) delivery of the pneumatic fluid from a first independent source to control a first associated service brake.
