An apparatus for use in turning steerable vehicle wheels includes a steering column having a pinion connected with a vehicle steering wheel such that rotation of the steering wheel results in rotation of the pinion. An electrically powered steering unit includes an electric motor having a first output shaft rotatable about an axis. A first planetary gear stage has a first gear reduction ratio and is driven by the first output shaft. A second planetary gear stage is driven by the first planetary gear stage and the pinion and has a second gear reduction ratio different from the first gear reduction ratio. A second output shaft is driven by the second planetary gear stage and coupled to the steerable wheels such that rotation of the second output shaft affects steering of the vehicle wheels.

An all-wheel steering system for a motor vehicle is described which has an active front axle steering system and an active rear axle steering system. The front axle steering system includes a gear ratio unit which is coupled to a steering wheel. The gear ratio unit is configured to define a front axle steering angle as a function of a steering wheel angle and a front axle steering ratio. In addition, the gear ratio unit is coupled to the rear axle steering system in such a way that the front axle steering ratio is adjustable as a function of a rear axle steering angle. Further, a motor vehicle having such an all-wheel steering system is discussed. Also presented is a method of operating an all-wheel steering system for a motor vehicle.

Motor-assisted steering ball-screw

A power assisted steering system provides a gear reduction between a steering wheel and a steering mechanism and a much larger gear reduction between an electric motor and a steering mechanism. The system is back-driveable from the steering mechanism. The system utilizes a ball-screw, several helical gears, and two bevel gears. A rack fixed to the ball-screw nut drives a sector gear.

An actual steering ratio, which is a linkage relationship between a steering target wheel and a steering wheel, is controlled based on a setting steering ratio. Then, when a “mismatch” occurs between the actual steering ratio and the setting steering ratio due to an emergent avoidance motion, a steering control apparatus corrects the setting steering ratio using a corrected steering ratio so as to reduce the “mismatch”, thereby improving the consistency of the linkage relationship between a driver's steering operation and the steering target wheel, allowing the relationship between a rotational angle of the steering wheel and a steering angle of the steering target wheel to match the steering ratio, and thus reducing an uncomfortable feeling evoked in a driver.
