Wood-based solar thermal devices, and methods for fabrication and use thereof

Solar thermal devices are formed from a block of wood, where the natural cell lumens of the wood form an interconnected network that transports fluid or material therein. The block of wood can be modified to increase absorption of solar radiation. Combining the solar absorption effects with the natural transport network can be used for various applications. In some embodiments, heating of the modified block of wood by insolation can be used to evaporate a fluid, for example, evaporating water for extraction, distillation, or desalination. In other embodiments, heating of the modified block of wood by insolation can be used to change transport properties of a material to allow it to be transported in the interconnected network, for example, heating crude oil to adsorb the oil within the block of wood.

There is disclosed a method of improving water quality, the method comprising adding a pool of isolated Daphnia to a body of water such that the pool of isolated Daphnia is exposed to one or more contaminants which may be in the water. The pool of isolated Daphnia comprise Daphnia which have been resurrected from dormant Daphnia. The pool of isolated Daphnia are allowed to filter from the body of water at least a portion of said one or more contaminants to reduce the level of the one or more contaminants in the body of water. After a period of time, at least a portion of the Daphnia containing said one or more contaminants are removed from the body of water, thereby improving the water quality of the body of water.

Ecological Remediation Method for Controlling Sulphur Pollution inBlack and Odorous Sludge of Rivers
20180002209 · 2018-01-04 ·

The Invention discloses an ecological remediation method for controlling sulphur pollution in black and odorous sludge of rivers. Firstly, the sludge from pollution layer of the rivers will be dredged and stacked on the banksides with slope protection built along the outer edge of the sludge storage site; then innocent pretreatment will be conducted for the sludge. Specific steps comprise solarization and ploughing, and mixed ameliorant of certain proportion will be added for modification between first solarization and intermittent ploughing. Then, large emergent aquatic plants will be planted on the stacked sludge after pretreatment. The technical method provided by the Invention may control the release of acid-volatile sulfide in the contaminated sludge on one hand and reduce concentration of volatile organic sulfide in the waters on the other hand. With simple technical process and strong operable technology, the Invention meets the current requirements for controlling sulphur pollution in black and odorous sludge of rivers in China and facilitates realizing the goal of long-term control of sulphur pollution in the deposit of the waters.

Method and Composition For Reducing Nitrates, Nitrites, and/or Hydroxylamine in Water Using a Homogeneous Reduced Copper Tetra-Substituted Fluorinated Pinacolate Ligand Catalyst Complex

A method for reducing nitrates, nitrites, and/or hydroxylamine in water using a homogeneous reduced copper tetra-substituted fluorinated pinacolate ligand catalyst complex. The method includes dissolving a copper(II) tetra-substituted fluorinated pinacolate ligand pre-catalyst complex in water having an excess amount of nitrates, nitrites, and/or hydroxylamine therein. The dissolved copper(II) tetra-substituted fluorinated pinacolate ligand pre-catalyst complex in the water is subjected to electrochemical reduction to form a homogeneous reduced copper tetra-substituted fluorinated pinacolate ligand catalyst complex. The homogeneous reduced copper tetra-substituted fluorinated pinacolate ligand catalyst complex reduces the nitrates, nitrites, and/or hydroxylamine in the water to compounds with nitrogen in a lower oxidation state with the homogeneous reduced copper tetra-substituted fluorinated pinacolate ligand catalyst complex.

Provided herein are methods of inactivating a mosquito larva, the methods comprising exposing the larva to an aqueous chlorine dioxide treatment solution for a minimum contact time, wherein the aqueous chlorine dioxide treatment solution comprises a residual chlorine dioxide concentration at the conclusion of the minimum contact time. Also provided herein are methods of treating a body of water containing a mosquito larva. The methods are effective to inactivate the larva, thereby preventing growth of mosquito populations and the related spread of mosquito-borne disease.

ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM FOR DEEP WATER ENVIRONMENT RESTORATION AND CONSTRUCTION METHOD THEREOF

An ecosystem for deep water environment restoration includes: a light-collecting device; an underwater lighting system connected to the light-collecting device and configured to provide light to a deep water layer of a water body; a photocatalytic bionic net comprising a photocatalytic material and a fiber and placed in the deep water layer; and an aquatic plant. When the photocatalytic material receives the light, the photocatalytic material is able to adsorb organic pollutants of the water body to the photocatalytic bionic net and catalyze degradation of the organic pollutants of the water body, concentrate microorganisms to allow the microorganisms to decompose the organic pollutants into nutrients required for growth of the aquatic plant, and absorb the light to catalyze decomposition of water to produce oxygen. When the aquatic plant receives the light, the aquatic plant is able to perform photosynthesis to release oxygen.

METHOD AND SYSTEMS FOR OXYGENATION OF WATER BODIES
20230023548 · 2023-01-26 ·

A cost-effective system and method dissolves gas, such as oxygen, into water in a manner that prevents gas bubble carry over by using a bubble capture system (BCS). The method further eliminates or minimizes turbulence at the suction and discharge of a pump using an energy dissipation header (EDH). The BCS can create a top-down flow that permits bubbles to rise faster than the velocity of the downward flow of water. The EDH can use a pipe design, such as a slotted pipe design, that permits a maximum system water flow. The technology can be applied to water bodies to mitigate eutrophication and may also be applicable in other fields, such as wastewater lift stations, fish farms, oil and gas industry, tidal applications with low flushing rates, and winter under ice oxygenation to prevent fish kills.
