QUARTZ GLASS CRUCIBLE AND MANUFACTURING METHOD THEREOF
A quartz glass crucible (1) has a structure wherein a peak of a distribution of a total concentration of Na, K, and Ca in a depth direction from an inner surface (10i) of the crucible is present at a position deeper than the inner surface (10i). In an exemplary embodiment, the quartz glass crucible is capable of improving the yield of a silicon single crystal by suppressing peeling-off of brown rings.
OPTICAL FIBER MANUFACTURING METHOD AND APPARATUS
An optical fiber manufacturing method includes: a drawing step of heating one end portion of an optical fiber preform to melt and deform the one end portion and drawing an optical fiber, wherein in the drawing step, drawing is performed while applying pressure to a melted-deformed portion that is melted and deformed.
Method for producing optical fiber preform, and optical fiber preform
A production method and others according to the present embodiment are provided with a structure for effectively preventing occurrence of accidental spiking during drawing of a preform. In order to control the residual He-concentration in the center part of the preform, a transparent glass rod that has a predetermined outer diameter and is already sintered but is not doped with an alkali metal yet is annealed in in the atmosphere not containing He gas for an annealing time determined by referring to result data in which the relationship between the annealing time and the residual He-concentration is previously recorded for each outer diameter. In the result data, actually measured data of the residual He-concentration in a produced optical fiber preform and the annealing time are accumulated as annealing treatment results.
Quartz glass component of high thermal stability, semifinished product therefor, and method for producing the same
In a known method for producing a quartz glass component, a crystal formation layer containing a crystallization promoter is produced on a coating surface of a base body of quartz glass. Starting therefrom, to provide a method for producing a quartz glass component of improved thermal strength and long-term stability which displays a comparatively small deformation particularly also in the case of rapid heating-up processes, it is suggested according to one aspect that a porous crystal formation layer containing amorphous SiO.sub.2 particles is produced with a mean thickness in the range of 0.1 to 5 mm, and that a substance which contains cesium and/or rubidium is used as the crystallization promoter.
MULTI-FIBER LIGHT GUIDE, DEVICE WITH A MULTI-FIBER LIGHT GUIDE AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME
A multi-fiber light guide includes: light guiding fibers, each fiber including an elongated glass core; a glass cladding, the cores being surrounded by the cladding to form a rigid and continuous glass element, the cores having a higher refractive index than the cladding such that light can be guided by a total reflection along the cores, which end in two abutting faces of the glass element such that light can be guided along the cores from one abutting face to the other abutting face; and an ion exchange layer at each of the abutting faces, the glass of the cores and the glass of the cladding including alkali ions, which are at least partly exchanged by alkali ions of a higher atomic number within the ion exchange layer at the abutting faces, the exchanged alkali ions within the ion exchange layer imparting a compressive stress at the abutting faces.
Optical fiber
An optical fiber according to an embodiment includes a core, a cladding, and a coating layer. At the boundary between the core and the cladding, the local sound velocity decreases in the direction from the core side toward the cladding side. At least in the cladding, the local sound velocity changes continuously in a radial direction. Further, the line width of the Brillouin gain of the light beam guided by the fundamental mode is 60 MHz or more.
OPTICAL FIBER
An optical fiber containing alkali metal elements or the like in which Rayleigh scattering loss can be reduced is provided. An optical fiber includes a core composed of silica glass and a cladding which surrounds the core, has a refractive index lower than a refractive index of the core, and is composed of silica glass containing fluorine. The core contains a first group of dopants and a second group of dopants having a diffusion coefficient lower than a diffusion coefficient of the first group of dopants. The difference between the maximum value and the minimum value of residual stress in the optical fiber is 150 MPa or less.
METHOD FOR PRODUCING OPTICAL FIBER BASE MATERIAL, AND OPTICAL FIBER BASE MATERIAL
A method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform includes: adding an alkali metal element or an alkaline earth metal element to an inner surface of a glass pipe made of silica-based glass; reducing a diameter of the glass pipe after the adding; etching an inner surface of a continuous section of the glass pipe in a longitudinal direction after the reducing; and collapsing the glass pipe after the etching. At least one of the adding, the reducing, the etching, and the collapsing includes performing a local etching on an inner surface of a section of the glass pipe that is shorter than the continuous section.

A quasi-single-mode optical fiber with a large effective area is disclosed. The quasi-single-mode fiber has a core with a radius greater than 5 μm, and a cladding section configured to support a fundamental mode and a higher-order mode. The fundamental mode has an effective area greater than 170 μm.sup.2 and an attenuation of no greater than 0.17 dB/km at a wavelength of 1530 nm. The higher-order mode has an attenuation of at least 1.0 dB/km at the wavelength of 1530 nm. The quasi-single-mode optical fiber has a bending loss of less than 0.02 dB/turn for a bend diameter of 60 mm for a wavelength of 1625 nm.
