The method further including exposing the sleeve to an acid solution such that a first portion of the first surface is exposed to the acid solution and a second portion of the first surface is not exposed to the acid solution. The first portion being adjacent to the central aperture when the sleeve is mounted in the selective etching apparatus, and the second portion being covered by the first end cap when the sleeve is mounted in the selective etching apparatus.

An optical fiber containing alkali metal elements or the like in which Rayleigh scattering loss can be reduced is provided. An optical fiber includes a core composed of silica glass and a cladding which surrounds the core, has a refractive index lower than a refractive index of the core, and is composed of silica glass containing fluorine. The core contains a first group of dopants and a second group of dopants having a diffusion coefficient lower than a diffusion coefficient of the first group of dopants. The difference between the maximum value and the minimum value of residual stress in the optical fiber is 150 MPa or less.

A method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform includes: adding an alkali metal element or an alkaline earth metal element to an inner surface of a glass pipe made of silica-based glass; reducing a diameter of the glass pipe after the adding; etching an inner surface of a continuous section of the glass pipe in a longitudinal direction after the reducing; and collapsing the glass pipe after the etching. At least one of the adding, the reducing, the etching, and the collapsing includes performing a local etching on an inner surface of a section of the glass pipe that is shorter than the continuous section.

The invention relates to a method for producing a glass-fibre preform with a core of a polygonal cross section by using a rod-in-tube method and comprising the method steps of: providing a core rod (1) of a polygonal core rod cross section (2), producing a sectored sandwich tube (3) from a starting tube (4), wherein the lateral surface of the starting tube (4) is slit in the longitudinal direction into a series of outer segments (8), and so the tube cross section of the starting tube (4) is subdivided into a series of sectors of a circle (7), inserting the core rod (1) into the sectored sandwich tube (3) and aligning it and, in the case of one embodiment, inserting the core rod (1) and the sectored sandwich tube (3) into an outer casing tube (10) with a complete annular cross section and melting the sectored sandwich tube (3) and possibly the outer casing tube (10) onto the sectored sandwich tube (3), wherein the outer segments (8) of the sectored sandwich tube (3) are fused to the respective side surfaces (9) of the core rod (1).

Tapered core fiber manufacturing methods

Tapered core fibers are produced using tapered core rods that can be etched or ground so that a fiber cladding has a constant diameter. The tapered core can be an actively doped core, or a passive core. One or more sleeving tubes can be collapsed onto a tapered core rod and exterior portions of the collapsed sleeving tubes can be ground to provide a constant cladding diameter in a fiber drawn from the preform.

As a result, the mean alkali metal element concentration in the whole core preform is controlled to 7 atomic ppm or more and 70 atomic ppm or less.
