A method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform includes: adding an alkali metal element or an alkaline earth metal element to an inner surface of a glass pipe made of silica-based glass; reducing a diameter of the glass pipe after the adding; etching an inner surface of a continuous section of the glass pipe in a longitudinal direction after the reducing; and collapsing the glass pipe after the etching. At least one of the adding, the reducing, the etching, and the collapsing includes performing a local etching on an inner surface of a section of the glass pipe that is shorter than the continuous section.
Method for manufacturing optical fiber parent material, and method for manufacturing optical fiber
A method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform including a core part and a cladding part is disclosed. The method includes: adding an alkali metal to an inner surface of a silica-based glass pipe; etching the inner surface of the silica-based glass pipe to which the alkali metal is added; making a glass rod by collapsing the silica-based glass pipe after the etching; and making an optical fiber preform using the glass rod. The silica-based glass pipe is heated in the adding such that a surface temperature of the silica-based glass pipe falls within a temperature range of 1500° C. or higher to lower than 2000° C.

Method, device, and system for heating an elongate silica cylinder in manufacturing optical fibers
The invention relates to exemplary methods, devices, and systems for heating an elongate silica cylinder to form a core-rod for optical fibers. An exemplary heating device includes an elongate cavity, an elongate liner bounding the cavity, a heating element in a heating element space surrounding the liner, the liner separating the heating element space from the cavity, and a gas flushing device for effecting a flow of gas at least through the heating element space. An exemplary method includes providing the elongate silica cylinder such that it extends through the cavity, heating the cylinder locally beyond its softening temperature, and effecting a flow of argon and nitrogen gas during the heating.
Method of manufacturing optical fiber preform and optical fiber preform
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing an optical fiber preform for obtaining an optical fiber with low transmission loss. A core preform included in the optical fiber preform comprises three or more core portions, which are each produced by a rod-in-collapse method, and in which both their alkali metal element concentration and chlorine concentration are independently controlled. In two or more manufacturing steps of the manufacturing steps for each of the three or more core portions, an alkali metal element is added. As a result, the mean alkali metal element concentration in the whole core preform is controlled to 7 atomic ppm or more and 70 atomic ppm or less.
Method for manufacturing a preform for optical fibers
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a preform for optical fibers, which method comprises the sequential steps of: i) deposition of non-vitrified silica layers on the inner surface of a hollow substrate tube; ii) deposition of vitrified silica layers inside the hollow substrate tube on the inner surface of the non-vitrified silica layers deposited in step i); iii) removal of the hollow substrate tube from the vitrified silica layers deposited in step ii) and the non-vitrified silica layers deposited in step i) to obtain a deposited tube; iv) optional collapsing said deposited tube obtained in step iii) to obtain a deposited rod comprising from the periphery to the center at least one inner optical cladding and an optical core; v) preparation of an intermediate layer by the steps of: * deposition of non-vitrified silica layers on the outside surface of the deposited tube obtained in step iii) or deposited rod obtained in step iv) with a flame hydrolysis process in an outer reaction zone using glass-forming precursors, and subsequently; * drying and consolidating said non-vitrified silica layers into a vitrified fluorine-doped silica intermediate cladding layer; and * in case preceding step iv) was omitted collapsing; to provide a solid rod comprising from the periphery to the center the intermediate layer, at least one inner optical cladding and an optical core; wherein a fluorine-comprising gas is used during the deposition and/or drying and/or consolidating and wherein the intermediate layer has a ratio between the outer diameter of the intermediate cladding layer (C) to the outer diameter of the optical core (A) that is at least 3.5; vi) deposition of natural silica on the outside surface of the intermediate cladding layer of the solid rod obtained in step v) by melting natural silica particles in an outer deposition zone to produce an outer cladding whereby a preform is obtained.
Photodarkening-resistant ytterbium-doped quartz optical fiber and preparation method therefor
A photodarkening-resistant ytterbium-doped quartz optical fiber and a method for prpearing such a fiber are provided. Glass of a photodarkening-resistant ytterbium-doped quartz optical fiber core rod includes at least Yb.sub.2O.sub.3, Al.sub.2O.sub.3, P.sub.2O.sub.5, SiO.sub.2. The proportions of Yb.sub.2O.sub.3, Al.sub.2O.sub.3, and P.sub.2O.sub.5 in the entire substance are Yb.sub.2O.sub.3: 0.05-0.3 mol %, Al.sub.2O.sub.3: 1-3 mol %, and P.sub.2O.sub.5: 1-5 mol %, respectively. In the preparation method for the photodarkening-resistant ytterbium-doped quartz optical fiber, a sol-gel method and an improved chemical vapor deposition method are combined. By using the molecular-level doping uniformity and the low preparation loss thereof respectively, ytterbium ions, aluminum ions and phosphorus ions are effectively doped in a quartz matrix, thereby effectively solving the problems in the optical fiber of high loss, photodarkening caused by cluster or the like, and a central refractive index dip.
Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition Process
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a primary preform for optical fibers by means of an internal plasma chemical vapor deposition (PCVD) process in a hollow silica substrate tube, the hollow substrate tube having a supply side and a discharge side. An exemplary method comprises depositing doped or non-doped silica layers on the inner surface of the hollow substrate tube by supplying glass-forming gasses to the interior of the hollow substrate tube via the supply side thereof, and by creating a plasma reaction zone in the interior of the hollow substrate tube by means of microwave radiation having a microwave power, wherein the microwave power is decreased during the depositing. The present invention further relates to a method for forming an optical fiber and to the primary preform and optical fiber directly obtainable by such methods.

The invention relates to a device, system, and method for forming a core-rod for optical fibers by collapsing a tube comprising deposited layers of silica to form the core-rod. The device comprises an elongate cavity, an elongate cylindrical carbon liner bounding the cavity, the liner connecting to a frame of the device at opposing end portions, a heating element in a heating element space, surrounding the liner, the liner separating the heating element space from the cavity, a ring of a refractory material, fixated to the frame, surrounding a part of a length of the cavity, the liner being provided such that an inner surface portion at a first end portion of the liner mates with a cylindrical outer surface portion of the ring such that the liner can axially move with the first end portion thereof along the outer surface portion of the ring.
