BROADBAND, FREEFORM FOCUSING MICRO OPTICS FOR SIDE-VIEWING IMAGING CATHETERS
The disclosed embodiments relate to a system that implements a side-viewing imaging catheter. This system includes a catheter sheath enclosing an imaging core, wherein the imaging core resents an internal optical channel coupled to an optical element located at the distal end of the imaging core. The optical element includes an internal reflective surface that reflects and focuses light transmitted via the optical channel in a direction orthogonal to a rotational axis of the catheter toward a target location, and returns reflected light from the target location back through the optical channel. This internal reflective surface of the optical element is shaped to focus the light so that a resulting beam shape at the target location has a small cross section area and substantially equal axial and transaxial dimensions.

Fiber Bragg gratings in carbon-coated optical fibers and techniques for making same
A technique is described for fabricating one or more optical devices in a carbon-coated optical fiber. A photosensitive optical fiber is provided having a hermetic carbon coating. Further provided is a laser having a beam output that is configured to inscribe one or more refractive index modulations into the optical fiber through the hermetic carbon layer while leaving the hermetic carbon layer intact. The laser is used to inscribe one or more optical devices into the optical fiber through the hermetic carbon layer.
QUARTZ FIBRE WITH HYDROGEN BARRIER LAYER AND METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION THEREOF
A method of manufacturing a quartz glass fibre includes producing a quartz glass primary preform by modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) in a quartz glass substrate tube and inserting the quartz glass primary preform into a glass jacketing tube. Defect-generating UV radiation is irridiated into the cross-sectional area of the glass jacketing tube while combining the quartz glass primary preform with the glass jacketing tube in the jacketing process to form a cladding layer to a secondary preform. A quartz glass fibre is pulled from the secondary preform.
