Specifically, provided is a coating composition containing a resin (A) having a hydroxyl group and an alkoxysilyl group, a curing agent (B), and an acrylic resin-coated silica particle (C) dispersion, wherein: the acrylic resin-coated silica particle (C) dispersion is a reaction product of silica particles with a polymerizable unsaturated group (c1) and a polymerizable unsaturated monomer mixture (c2); and the polymerizable unsaturated monomer mixture (c2) contains, as at least a part of components thereof, a polymerizable unsaturated monomer having a polysiloxane structure (c21) and an alkoxysilyl group-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer (c22).

The functional material of the present invention comprises an inorganic powder whose surface has a modified layer, wherein the inorganic powder comprises any one or more of aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, zirconium oxide, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, boron oxide, diiron trioxide, calcium oxide, potassium oxide, sodium oxide and lithium oxide; the modified layer is generated via cyclization by dehydrating the reaction product of a dianhydride and a diamine. The alignment material of the present invention comprises the above functional material. The liquid crystal display substrate of the present invention comprises an alignment layer made from the above alignment material.

The present invention provides a method for preparing modified silicon dioxide nano-particles and a drilling fluid suitable for shale gas wells containing the modified silicon dioxide nano-particles as a plugging agent. When the modified silicon dioxide nano-particles provided in the present invention are used as a plugging agent in a drilling fluid, they will not agglomerate into large-size particles, and can achieve a good plugging effect. ##STR00001##

Films resulting from the silica-based matting agents on a wood substrate unexpectedly provide improved chemical resistance and/or film clarity to the surface of the wood substrate. Methods of making and using the silica-based matting agents are also disclosed.
