Structural adhesive compositions

An adhesive composition is disclosed. The adhesive composition comprises an epoxy-containing component; rubber particles having a core-shell structure; and a curing component comprising a mixture of an amine-containing compound substantially free of hydroxyl functional groups and a polymeric phenol-containing compound, wherein the amine-containing compound comprises primary and/or secondary amino groups, and wherein the curing component chemically reacts with the epoxy-containing component upon activation from an external energy source. Also disclosed are methods of preparing the adhesive composition and for forming a bonded substrate with the adhesive composition. Further disclosed are curing components for an adhesive composition and methods of making the curing components.

A resorcinolic novolac resin composition comprising the reaction product of (i) an aldehyde or ketone, and (ii) aralkyl-substituted resorcinol and resorcinol, where the moles of the aralkyl-substituted resorcinol to the total moles of the resorcinol and aralkyl-substituted resorcinol is 0.01:1 to 0.4:1.

Engineered wood products and binder compositions are provided. In preferred embodiments, the engineered wood products include wax. Methods are also provided for formulating binders for wood comprising unmodified soy flour and synthetic adhesives. The soy-based formulations are prepared by mixing unmodified soy flour with the synthetic adhesive prior to application to the wood or by adding them sequentially to the wood. The present invention provides adequate bonding at reduced cost.
