System and method for liquid fuel production from carbonaceous materials using recycled conditioned syngas

A method of producing liquid fuel and/or chemicals from a carbonaceous material entails combusting a conditioned syngas in pulse combustion heat exchangers of a steam reformer to help convert carbonaceous material into first reactor product gas which includes carbon monoxide, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and other gases. A portion of the first reactor product gas is transferred to a hydrogen reformer into which additional conditioned syngas is added and a reaction carried out to produce an improved syngas. The improved syngas is then subject to one or more gas clean-up steps to form a new conditioned syngas. A portion of the new conditioned syngas is recycled to be used as the conditioned syngas in the pulse combustion heat exchangers and in the hydrocarbon reformer. A system for carrying out the method include, a steam reformer, a hydrocarbon reformer, first and second gas-cleanup systems, a synthesis system and an upgrading system.

A second gaseous stream rich in a synthesis gas and a second particle stream rich in heated and regenerated particles can be obtained from the gasification zone effluent. At least a portion of the second particle stream can be fed into the pyrolysis zone.

The integrated biomass conversion system comprises a syngas generator, such as a gasifier, a cleanup engine and a syngas utilization system, which could be a power producing engine or a chemical reactor for chemical or fuel synthesis. The cleanup engine operates rich and at high temperatures so that the tars exhausted by the syngas generators are destroyed and not allowed to foul other components. An orderly sequence to start and shut down the integrated biomass conversion system is disclosed.

The high biogenic carbon Fischer Tropsch liquids may be upgraded to biogenic carbon liquid fuels. Alternatively, the incoming feedstock is processed to selectively recover plastic material from the incoming feedstock to produce a processed feedstock having biogenic carbon content of 50% or less.

The method includes gasifying coal to produce a coal gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide; transferring heat from the coal gas to a natural gas reforming mixture including water and methane; reforming the natural gas reforming mixture to form a reformed natural gas; mixing the coal gas, the reformed natural gas, and a recycled gas including hydrogen and carbon monoxide to form a synthesis gas; reacting the synthesis gas to form methanol and a waste gas; separating the methanol and the waste gas; removing hydrogen from the waste gas to produce a dehydrogenated waste gas; and subjecting the dehydrogenated waste gas to a water-gas shift reaction to produce the recycled gas.

A method for producing a purified gas, comprising removing an impurity in a waste-derived raw material gas, the method comprising: a solid-phased impurity removing step S11 of passing the raw material gas through a phase transitioning impurity removing unit to remove a solid-phased phase transitioning impurity in the raw material gas; and an impurity removing step S12 of passing the raw material gas after the solid-phased impurity removing step through a pressure swing adsorption apparatus combined with a vacuum pump to remove an impurity in the raw material gas.
