Filter handling tool

A molten metal filter box. The filter box includes a filter housing provided in a flow path for molten metal. A horizontal partition is disposed within the filter housing and has at least one filter receiving passage. A filter medium in the shape of a substantially flat plate is positioned within the filter receiving passage and below an inflow path of the molten metal. The filter medium includes a hole. A filter handling tool is disposed within the hole. The filter handling tool can optionally include a handle secured to the molten metal filter box to suspend the filter medium. Advantageously, the filter medium can be removed by grasping the filter handling tool and removing the filter medium.

CERAMIC FILTERS AND FILTER SYSTEMS FOR CONTINUOUS METAL MELT FILTRATION

With respect to ceramic filters and filter systems for continuous metal melt filtration, to be able to counter high throughputs of steel melt and also the limitations of filter capacities during continuous casting, an alternative technological approach involves the use of novel, replaceable, and/or rotatable filter bodies at positions in the distributor channel. In some cases, the replaceable and/or rotatable filter bodies may be inserted into the distributor channel for 10 seconds to 30 minutes before being replaced. The filter bodies may be configured as an open-celled foam ceramic or a honeycomb body or a spaghetti filter and serve as a filter geometry of the replaceable and/or rotatable filter bodies in the distributor channel.

Device and method for filtering molten metal

A device and method for transferring filtered molten metal to a die casting mold. The device and method include a casting filtration system that includes a funnel and a continuously replaceable filter placed fluidly between a molten metal source and a casting mold. Both the funnel and filter are automatically moved into cooperation with a molten metal receptacle such as a shot sleeve prior to each casting operation, and then automatically moved out of the way so that pressurization of the filtered molten metal may take place in the receptacle. In addition, the filter may be formed on a continuous strand such that indexed movement of the strand will advance the used portion of the filter out of the way to make room for a new unused filter portion that will be ready for a subsequent repeated casting operation.

According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a method of priming a ceramic filter element for removal of solid inclusions from liquid metal is provided. The filter element is contained in a filter box and at least two separate inductors are placed on opposed sides of the filter element. The method includes the steps of a) applying an excitation current to the inductors, b) adding sufficient liquid metal to cover an upstream side of the filter element, c) allowing the current induced in the liquid metal by the inductors to create Lorentz forces which press upon and stir the liquid metal such that the liquid metal is forced into the ceramic filter element, hence priming the filter element, and d) discontinuing the excitation current once a predetermined degree of priming has been obtained.
