Smooth and low density paperboard structures and methods for manufacturing the same

A method for manufacturing a paperboard structure includes passing a paperboard substrate through a hot-hard calender to yield a calendered paperboard substrate, the hot-hard calender including a nip defined by a thermo-roller and a counter roller, wherein a contact surface of the thermo-roller is heated to an elevated temperature. The method then includes applying a basecoat to the calendered paperboard substrate to yield a basecoated paperboard substrate, the basecoat includes a basecoat binder and a basecoat pigment blend. The method further includes applying a topcoat to the basecoated paperboard substrate.

Smooth and bulky rolled tissue products

The novel tissue products of the present invention are generally produced by calendering a tissue basesheet using at least one patterned roll. In one embodiment the patterned roll replaces the flat steel roll commonly used in calendering. The elements on the patterned roll provide a means of providing a nip having variable loading that yields a web having a smooth surface without subjecting the web to excessive compression forces and preventing excessive caliper loss. Thus, webs converted according to the present invention have comparable or better surface smoothness compared to webs converted using conventional calendering means and also retain a greater percentage of their caliper and bulk.

Method and device for the treatment of a product web

A method for a treatment of a product web which is transported in an advance direction includes guiding the product web through a treatment gap which is formed by a first treatment roll being arranged in a first working position and a contour tool, providing a second roll, moving the second roll into a second working position in which the second roll forms a second treatment gap with the counter tool, and moving the first treatment roll into a first parked position in which the first treatment roll does not form a treatment gap with the counter tool.
