Herein described is a plant (10) for manufacturing web-like paper material which comprises a system for controlling process fluids. The plant (10) comprises a first wet half-hood (14), a second dry half-hood (16) and four unidirectional flow regulating devices (28, 30; 34, 40) which, suitably positioned on the return circuits (22; 24) of the mist from both half-hoods (14; 16), allow the parallel operation of such half-hoods (14; 16). A fifth bidirectional flow regulating device (40) allows to selectively operate the half-hoods (14; 16) both in reverse cascade mode, that is releasing the mist coming from the first wet half-hood (14) on the return circuit (24) of the second dry half-hood (16), and then release all the mist coming from both the half-hoods (14; 16), and in direct cascade mode, that is releasing the mist coming from the second dry half-hood (16) into the return circuit (22) of the first wet half-hood (14), to release all the mist coming from both half-hoods (14; 16) into the atmosphere once again.

A traversable measuring device (15) for determining a cross direction profile of a property of a moving lignocellulose-containing fiber web (2). The measuring device has a property measuring sensor (23) for determining a measurement result representing the property of the web at multiple cross directional measurement positions (P1, P2, P3, P4), a position measuring sensor (24) for determining the cross directional measurement position of the property measuring sensor associating to the respective measurement result, and an analysis device (25) for receiving the measurement results and the respective cross directional measurement positions (P1, P2, P3, P4) and for allocating the measurement results with the respective cross directional measurement positions for forming the cross direction profile of the web property (2). A method for creping paper includes applying an adhesive composition to an outer surface of a creping cylinder (Yankee cylinder) to form an adhesive coating, contacting paper with the adhesive coating, removing the paper and adhesive coating from the creping cylinder, and determining a quality of the adhesive coating. Determining the quality of the adhesive coating may include measuring a degree of cross-linking of the adhesive polymer, a concentration of the adhesive polymer in the adhesive coating, a water content of the adhesive coating, an ash content of the adhesive coating, or combinations thereof. Determining the quality of the adhesive coating may also include determining a thickness of the adhesive coating by measuring light absorbed by the coating and calculating the thickness using Beer's Law. Systems and apparatuses for determining the quality of the adhesive coating and for creping paper are also disclosed.

A reel editor is configured to edit the roll based on waste and/or errors that occurred during various manufacturing processes (e.g., during printing). A control plan defining what is on each roll of printed web product may be updated after editing. Depending on the configuration, the reel editor may be integrated with various manufacturing components. The reel editor may be configured to determine if there is enough waste on the roll to even making editing worthwhile, such as based on desired quality of the images, customer requirements, different price points, among other possible factors.

An electro-pneumatic converter adjusts pressure of the air at a delivery pressure and an input connects to an air line at a fixed pressure greater than the delivery pressure, and. An output connects to the mechanical brake at a preset braking torque. A solenoid valve pneumatically connects at the input, to an electro-pneumatic converter output, to the air line at the pressure from the machine, and at the output. The delivery line connects the solenoid valve to the mechanical brake. The command/control unit calculates splitting braking torque between mechanical braking torque and motor-generator braking torque and controls the motor-generator braking torque.

The techniques include measuring process data, wherein the process data includes vibration data, and wherein measuring process data includes measuring vibration data of a creping blade using one or more vibration sensors. The techniques further include assigning a score for the process data, including assigning a vibration score for the vibration data. The techniques also include generating an index score based on the score for the process data and the vibration score for the vibration data.

PREDICTIVE CONTROL OF YANKEE DRYER CHEMISTRY AND CREPED PRODUCT QUALITY

A system and method is provided for proactive process intervention in manufacturing creped products via a chemical feed stage and a Yankee dryer stage. The method includes generating signals from a plurality of online sensors, corresponding to directly measured variables for respective process components such as, e.g., pH, conductivity, and Yankee blade vibration. Models are developed including retrievable information relating combinations of certain directly measured variables to respective quality characteristics of the creped product. The method further includes indirectly determining quality characteristics (e.g., softness, bulk) for the creped product, substantially in real time, based on, e.g., signals corresponding to directly measured variables, and optionally a predicted natural coating potential. An output feedback signal is automatically generated corresponding to a detected intervention event based on the indirectly determined one or more quality characteristics and respective predetermined targets. The feedback signal may automatically regulate chemistry feed characteristics, substantially in real time.
