A system for extracting polluted air in the vicinity of a road surface, the system comprising at least one inlet assembly arranged to be recessed into the road surface and to be connected to an extraction duct, said at least one inlet assembly comprising: a pod arranged to protrude above the level of the road surface and to be driven over; and one or more intakes located within the pod, the pod defining a passage arranged to be connected to an extraction duct.

The disclosure relates to an apparatus for reducing the quantity of solid particles in ambient air. A predefined treatment area is delimited at least in part by an enclosure. The enclosure is at least partially non-physical and formed by at least one air curtain that can be produced by an air flow generating device. At least one air filter device, which is connected in terms of flow to the ambient air of the treatment area is designed to filter solid particles directly out of the ambient air of the treatment area.

An apparatus for controlling airborne pollution comprises a leeward wall located near a polluted region, and a windward wall located between the leeward wall and the polluted region. One method includes applying an amount of an asphalt surface treatment compound to an upper surface of the asphalt surface, the asphalt surface treatment compound including a mixture of a liquid carrier compound with a titanium dioxide (TiO.sub.2) photocatalyst.
