PORTABLE WIND RESISTANT SHADE STRUCTURE
20230026166 · 2023-01-26 ·

The invention provides a portable, free-standing shade structure that is resistant to wind. The inventive shade structure can comprise a frame and a sheet, or canopy, that is connected to the frame under tension at two or more different heights to create an uneven, hypar conformation in the sheet. The uneven, hypar conformation of the sheet transfers wind force to the frame so as to press the frame against the surface upon which the shade structure rests, thereby making the inventive shade structure resistant to the movement, tipping, lift, and vibration that typically results when a portable shade structure is exposed to wind.

A system for a dynamically orienting adjustable shelter is provided. The system generally comprises a base, lever arm, counterweight, boom, canopy, canopy supports, and support cables connected to said canopy supports. The boom and lever arm connect to the base in a way such that the boom may be in an upright position when a counterweight is placed on the lever arm. A canopy assembly may be rotatable attached boom in a way that allows it to rotate about said boom, which allows the canopy assembly to reduce the cross-sectional area of the canopy exposed to the wind. A cable may be attached to the front end of the canopy supports, which may prevent the back end of the canopy from tipping too far down when there is no wind that the system may use to stabilize the canopy by naturally reducing the cross-sectional area exposed thereto.

TENSION RELEASE SYSTEM
20170363131 · 2017-12-21 · ·

A method of installing a releasable shade membrane to a shade system is presented. The method comprises installing a tension release system within a structural component of the shade system. The tension release system comprises a threaded member configured to, when actuated, cause a coupling mechanism to move along an axis defined by the threaded member. The method also comprises coupling a shade membrane to the coupling mechanism. The method also comprises actuating the threaded member in a first direction, such that the coupling mechanism moves along the axis in a tensioning direction. The tension release system is configured to release applied tension upon actuation of the threaded member in a second direction, causing the coupling mechanism to move along the axis in a release direction. The release direction is substantially the reverse direction of the tensioning direction.
