Dual end firing explosive column tools and methods for selectively expanding a wall of a tubular
11713637 · 2023-08-01 ·

A method of selectively expanding a wall of a tubular includes assembling an expansion tool comprising a plurality of bi-directional boosters, arranging a predetermined number of explosive pellets a serially-arranged column between the bi-directional boosters, positioning a duel end firing explosive column tool within the tubular, and detonating the bi-directional boosters to simultaneously ignite opposing ends of the serially-arranged column to form two shock waves. The shock waves collide to create an amplified shock wave that travels radially outward to impact the tubular and expand a portion of the tubular wall radially outward, without perforating or cutting through the portion of the wall, to form a protrusion of the tubular at the portion of the wall. The protrusion extends into an annulus adjacent an outer surface of the wall of the tubular.

The invention also relates to a downhole system comprising the downhole packer assembly and a positive displacement pump for expanding the expandable tubular element.

Method for sealing fractures in a subterranean well casing
20230025125 · 2023-01-26 ·

A method and an apparatus for sealing perforations or cracks found in an oil well casing. The apparatus includes a hydraulic cylinder with an oil supply section at one end and a rod at another end, a cylindrical liner at least a portion of which is a malleable metal and a receiver, the liner with an outer diameter suitable for entry in to the well casing; and a frusto-conical wedge being disposed at a lower end of the liner and fixedly connected to the rod, the frusto-conical wedge having a section with a diameter larger than an inner diameter of the liner. The method includes lowering the apparatus into the well casing and increasing hydraulic pressure to the hydraulic cylinder sufficient to pull the frusto-conical shaped wedge into the liner providing sufficient lateral force to force sufficient liner material into the perforations or cracks of the well casing to seal the well casing wall

Casing patch system

A casing patch system comprising a base tubular with two anchor/seals coupled to the base tubular and an expansion tool comprising two expansion devices positioned such that upon expansion of the first anchor/seal, the second expansion device engages the second anchor/seal, which allows reduction of the expansion forces due to sequential expansion and reduces the length of the displacement necessary for setting the casing patch, eliminating the need for resetting the thruster, which allows deployment and setting of the casing patch on a wireline. In another embodiment, the expansion device comprises two swages coupled to a shaft at a distance between them approximately equal to the length of the anchor/seal. The swage diameters are selected such that the expansion forces of the anchor/seal by front and back swages are approximately equal, resulting in significantly less expansion force compared to the expansion force necessary for expansion by a single swage, which allows a high degree of anchor/seal expansions unachievable by single swage expansion devices.

EXPANDING A TUBULAR IN A WELLBORE

A downhole tool includes a top sub-assembly that couples to a downhole conveyance and a housing. The housing includes a bore that extends through the housing from the top sub-assembly to a downhole end of the housing opposite the uphole end, and a plurality of compartments fluidly coupled to the bore. The downhole end of the housing including a tapered portion. At least one of the plurality of compartments includes at least one piston configured to extend away from the housing to forcibly expand at least a portion of a wellbore tubular based at least in part on a fluid pressure in the at least one compartment. The tool includes at least one hydraulic swage coupled to the housing and configured to expand to forcibly expand at least the portion of the wellbore tubular based at least in part on a fluid pressure in the bore.

WELLBORE ANCHOR INCLUDING ONE OR MORE ACTIVATION CHAMBERS

Provided, in one aspect, is an anchor for use with a downhole tool in a wellbore. The anchor, according to this aspect, may include a base pipe; and one or more expandable chambers positioned radially about the base pipe. The one or more expandable chambers may, in some aspects, be configured to move from a first collapsed state to a second activated state; and the one or more expandable chambers may be operable to handle at least 20.7 Bar of internal pressure in the second activated state to engage a wall of a wellbore.

Liner retrieval tool and method

A string includes a pipe that is connected to an expansion mechanism and a retrieval tool that is connected to the pipe above the expansion mechanism. The retrieval tool includes a carrier that can selectively latch on an expandable liner and one or more actuators. The retrieval tool can ensure latching of the carrier while the expandable liner is above the Blow-out Preventer. The retrieval tool can prevent accidental latching of the carrier on the expandable liner during the expansion of the liner. By manipulating the pipe, the retrieval tool can force the carrier's release from the expandable liner.
