Engine systems with exhaust air injection after three-way catalytic converters for non stoichiometric rich operation
Engine systems use a three-way catalyst followed by air injection and mixing to convert all hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide under various load conditions when exhaust gas temperature is above 500 degrees Celsius. A three-way catalytic converter is disposed in the exhaust system. A nozzle is configured to inject air into the exhaust system downstream from the three-way catalytic converter. A mixing plate with or without catalyst coatings is disposed in the exhaust system downstream from the nozzle. The mixing plate is bow shaped with a concave shaped side facing the nozzle to enhance carbon monoxide conversion. Optional two way catalytic converters are added downstream from the mixing plate to further reduce tailpipe hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions.
CO2 recovery system
A CO.sub.2 recovery system used in a vehicle includes a CO.sub.2 recovery device recovering CO.sub.2 contained in inflowing gas; and a flow rate control device controlling flow rates of gases present in a plurality of different regions of the vehicle flowing into the CO.sub.2 recovery device. The gases present at the plurality of different regions include at least any two among air at an outside of the vehicle, air at an inside of the vehicle, and exhaust gas discharged from a body of an internal combustion engine of the vehicle.
METHOD FOR DIAGNOSING AN EXHAUST COMPONENT IN AN EXHAUST PASSAGE FOR AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE OF A VEHICLE
A method for diagnosing an exhaust component in an exhaust passage for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle. In the method, operating parameters of the internal combustion engine are monitored and recorded by a control unit while the internal combustion engine is running. If a predefined emission threshold for the exhaust component for compliance with emissions is found to have been exceeded, the current operating parameters of the internal combustion engine are stored in a control unit. The operating state of the internal combustion engine when the predefined emission threshold is exceeded is reproduced on a vehicle test bench using the stored operating parameters. The diagnosis of the exhaust component is carried out based on a comparison between the current measured value from the exhaust component and the current measured value from an emission measuring device and/or the predefined emission threshold.
ENGINE CONTROL APPARATUS
Provided is an engine control apparatus capable of detecting degradation in particulate filter performance. An input unit receives a first signal indicating an exhaust gas state (Tpf_2) inside or downstream of a particulate filter that traps particulate substance contained in engine exhaust gas. A determination unit 16a determines whether the particulate filter is degraded on the basis of the exhaust gas state (Tpf_2) indicated by the first signal in a period (fFC=1) in which fuel supply to the engine is blocked.

A chemical species mass flow meter measurement system for use in fluid mixture streams includes a chemical species concentration detection analyzer physically located within a fluid volume flow rate sensing probe along with bulk temperature and pressure sensing devices for relating to standard conditions. The system uses concentration detection analyzers specifically suited to the intended application. Applications include the measurement of exhaust mass emissions from vehicles, the fuel economy of vehicles, as well as the measurement of the mass flow rate of chemical species of interest in general industrial processes.

A method for operating an internal combustion engine includes combusting a fuel and air mixture within a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, thereby forming an exhaust gas, passing the exhaust gas out of the combustion chamber, performing a startup procedure, the startup procedure including passing the exhaust gas from the combustion chamber to a storage unit, capturing criteria pollutants of the exhaust gas with the storage unit, passing the exhaust gas from the storage unit to an aftertreatment system, heating the aftertreatment system to an activation temperature with the exhaust gas from the storage unit, and subsequent to heating the aftertreatment system to the activation temperature, performing a secondary procedure, the secondary procedure including passing the exhaust gas from the combustion chamber to the aftertreatment system thereby forming a treated exhaust gas, and passing the treated exhaust gas to the storage unit.

A CO.sub.2 mass estimation system includes: an acquisition element acquiring detected values in accordance with concentrations of oxygen, H.sub.2O, and CO.sub.2 contained in an engine exhaust gas output from a gas sensor; a setting element setting an air-fuel ratio of a mixture; and a calculation element calculating the mass of CO.sub.2 contained in the exhaust gas, wherein the calculation element calculates the concentrations of oxygen, H.sub.2O, and CO.sub.2 contained in the exhaust gas based on the sensor detected values, acquires concentrations of oxygen and H.sub.2O in air and the air-fuel ratio, calculates a composition ratio of at least C atoms contained in fuel based on the concentrations in the exhaust gas, the concentrations in the air, and the air-fuel ratio, and estimates the mass of CO.sub.2 contained in the exhaust gas based on the composition ratio and the amount of injection of the fuel into the engine.
