Models that employ both measurable engine parameters as well as predictable engine parameters may be used to determine when a thermostat is malfunctioning before the thermostat malfunction results in an engine breakdown. Particular models may be used to provide an estimated coolant temperature and an estimated thermostat position. The estimated coolant temperature can be compared to an actual measured engine coolant temperature. The estimated thermostat position can be evaluated with respect to what the thermostat position should be given a particular engine coolant temperature. In some cases, comparison between a healthy model and a faulty model may be used to ascertain thermostat health.

A thermostatic valve includes a hollow body, two openings opening into the body and being hydraulically connected by a pass section, and a shut-off component arranged partially in the pass section and having a thermostatic actuator, a return component, a valve capable of opening the first opening when actuated by the thermostatic actuator and of closing the first opening when returned by the return component. The thermostatic actuator includes a cylinder containing an expansion material and a stem defining an axial direction. A relative movement between the cylinder and the stem along the axial direction occurs under the action of the expansion material. The stem bears at an ends against an abutment element, which is movable under the action of movement component in the direction of the cylinder to allow the opening of the first opening when the temperature of the expansion material is below the threshold temperature.

A device that includes a thermostatic element, with a piston and a body movable along an axis with respect to one another under the effect of the expansion of a thermodilatable material, and a stopper moved axially by the body with respect to a fixed seat so as to open and close a fluid circulation passage. The stopper includes a flexible seal which rests sealingly against the fixed seat in order to close the passage, and a rigid frame which fixedly supports the seal. The frame includes a central portion, mounted around the body to be driven by the body, and a peripheral part, folded towards the axis, partially crushing the seal. The seal is held in place on the frame by being pushed, radially to the axis, directly against the body of the thermostatic element under the effect of crushing the seal by the peripheral portion of the frame.

An engine system is provided, including an engine having a water jacket, a circulation system that circulates coolant through the water jacket, and a controller. The circulation system includes a radiator passage including a heat exchanger, a bypass passage bypassing the heat exchanger, a flow rate control device, and a thermally-actuated valve connected to the radiator passage and that opens to allow the coolant to pass through the heat exchanger. When an engine load is below a first load, the controller controls the flow rate control device to adjust the coolant flow rate flowing through the water jacket according to the load, by closing the radiator passage and adjusting the coolant flow rate flowing through the bypass passage. When the load is above the first load, the controller controls the flow rate control device so that the coolant flows through each of the radiator passage and the bypass passage.
