Multiple fuel tank purge system and method
11572843 · 2023-02-07 ·

A multiple fuel tank purge system and method includes providing a pair of fuel tanks, including a main fuel tank for containing impure fuel and a separate, auxiliary fuel tank that contains commercial canned fuel. The engine runs on the impure fuel from the main fuel tank while the engine is in normal use, and then employs a shutdown cycle that switches to the commercial canned fuel from the auxiliary fuel tank for some pre-set time period. This arrangement allows the engine to be purged of the impure fuel (by burning the impure fuel during the shutdown cycle) and replaced by the commercial pre-mixed fuel before the engine is finally shut down. The system may further include a novel fuel cap with a fuel line, a tank within a tank fuel container, and/or an electronically actuated shutdown cycle mechanism.

SYSTEMS FOR A MULTI-FUEL CAPABLE ENGINE

Various methods and systems are provided for a multi-fuel capable engine. The system includes a liquid fuel system to deliver liquid fuel to an engine, a gaseous fuel system to deliver gaseous fuel to the engine, and a control system. The control system can control and test the liquid and gaseous fuel systems.

The fuel system for introducing liquid fuel into the cylinders of a piston engine has a fuel tank for storing the fuel, a pump for pressurizing the fuel, at least one fuel injector for injecting fuel into a cylinder of the engine, and a fuel pipe for supplying fuel from the pump to the fuel injector. The fuel system further has a source of inert gas and means for introducing inert gas into the fuel pipe for purging the fuel pipe.

METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR SHUT DOWN OF A MULTI-FUEL ENGINE

Various methods and systems are provided for venting fuel lines in a dual-fuel engine. In one example, a method may include in response to an engine shut-down request, venting fuel lines to remove hydrogen from the fuel lines.

Hybrid vehicle fuel vapor canister

Embodiments for controlling fuel vapors are disclosed. In one example, a method comprises during a purge of a fuel vapor canister, adjusting a heater of the fuel vapor canister based on a rate of a purge flow exiting the fuel vapor canister and a concentration of hydrocarbons released from the fuel vapor canister. In this way, a fuel vapor canister purge efficiency may be increased.

Purge system for a dual-fuel engine

A fuel system for an engine has a cylinder with an inlet air port, an air box surrounding the inlet air port, and a gaseous fuel injector positioned in the air box and having a nozzle located at the inlet air port. The fuel system also has a gaseous fuel control valve, a fuel supply line fluidly extending from the gaseous fuel control valve to the gaseous fuel injector, a purge valve, and a purge fluid supply line fluidly extending from the purge valve to at least one of the fuel supply line and the gaseous fuel injector. The fuel system also has a return valve and a return line fluidly extending from at least one of the fuel supply line and the gaseous fuel injector.

GAS SUPPLY SYSTEM FOR A GAS ENGINE OR DUAL-FUEL ENGINE AND METHOD FOR OPERATING THE SAME

A gas supply system, having a gas regulating station for supplying an engine with gaseous fuel and a double-walled gas line extending from the gas regulating station to the engine, which comprises an inner and an outer pipe, in a gas fuel operating mode the inner pipe is flowed through by the gaseous fuel towards an engine-side end of the double-walled gas line, an inert gas purging line, and a first shut-off valve assigned to the inert gas purging line. In a purging mode inert gas can be fed to the outer pipe at the gas regulating station-side, which inert gas flows through the outer pipe in the direction of the engine-side end of the double-walled gas line, where it passes into the inner pipe and flows via the inner pipe towards the gas regulating station-side end of the double-walled gas line.

Reverse flow detection system

A method for detecting reverse flow for a dual fuel engine is disclosed. The engine may include an intake manifold, a liquid fuel supply line and a gaseous fuel supply line, the gaseous fuel supply line including a gaseous fuel supply and a gaseous fuel rail. The method may include: operating the dual fuel engine in a liquid fuel only mode via the liquid fuel supply line; determining a reverse flow in the gaseous fuel supply line; and outputting an indication of reverse flow in response to the determination of reverse flow.

Method and control device for operating a common-rail fuel supply system

A method for operating a common-rail fuel supply system of an internal combustion engine includes determining, dependent on an operating point of the engine, a set point rate of delivery of the high-pressure pumping device, and a set point pressure for the pressure storage system under high pressure, determining, dependent on a deviation between the set point pressure and an actual pressure in the pressure storage system, for a first part quantity of the throttle valves a closed-loop control portion for the position of the respective throttle valve, and activating the first part quantity of the throttle valves with the closed-loop control portion in addition to open-loop control for only the respective throttle valve of the first part quantity of the throttle valves. The, or each, throttle valve of a second part quantity of the throttle valves is exclusively activated with the open-loop control portion.

Methods and systems for operating a vehicle with two fuel tanks

Systems and methods for operating a fuel system that includes two separate fuel tanks are disclosed. In one example, fuel may be purged from a fuel rail in response to Reid vapor pressure of a fuel so that engine starting may be improved. A fuel with a higher Reid vapor pressure may be pumped into the fuel rail when the engine is expected to be cold started.
