TURBOCHARGER CONTROL WITH OVERSPEED PROTECTION
20230038827 · 2023-02-09 ·

Systems and methods for controlling turbocharger operation by maintaining a virtual turbocharger speed calculation using airflow parameters in the context of an engine. An example uses a turbocharger speed estimator, an energy observer, and an energy controller. Optimization of turbocharger speed control, including avoidance of overspeed, while reducing wastegate actuation, can be achieved using a predictive control algorithm.

Engine system with inferential sensor

An engine system incorporating an engine, one or more sensors, and a controller. The controller may be connected to the one or more sensors and the engine. The one or more sensors may be configured to sense one or more parameters related to operation of the engine. The controller may incorporate an air-path state estimator configured to estimate one or more air-path state parameters in the engine based on values of one or more parameters sensed by the sensors. The controller may have an on-line and an off-line portion, where the on-line portion may incorporate the air-path state estimator and the off-line portion may configure and/or calibrate a model for the air-path state estimator.

Control system with diagnostics monitoring for engine control

New and/or alternative approaches to engine performance control that can account for the need to robustly monitor performance and/or operation of the physical plant and actuators thereof, while avoiding or limiting performance degradation. Model predictive control (MPC) or other control configuration such as proportional-integral-derivative control may be used to control the system by identifying a performance optimized control solution. In some examples, a modification to the performance optimized solution analysis is made to weight control solutions in favor of robust monitoring conditions. In other examples, the performance optimized solution is post-processed and modified to favor robust monitoring conditions.

In a case where an internal combustion engine is executing an all-cylinder operation to operate all cylinders, an air-fuel ratio estimation part of an ECU 1 estimates an air-fuel ratio of each of the cylinders by using a first observer. On the other hand, in a case where the internal combustion engine is executing a cylinder-cut operation to rest a part of the cylinders and to operate other of the cylinders, the air-fuel ratio estimation part does not estimate the air-fuel ratio of each of the cylinders by using the first observer.
