IGNITION SYSTEM

An ignition system has an ignition plug and an ignition control unit that controls the ignition plug. When an engine is in a predetermined operating state, the ignition control unit performs ignition control after top dead center to perform ignition after the compression top dead center. The ignition system has an airflow support structure that facilitates the flow of airflow through a discharge gap at least after the compression top dead center. The ignition system is configured such that due to the airflow support structure and the timing of the ignition, airflow at a flow rate of 5 m/s or more flows through the discharge gap during a spark period after top dead center, which is the generation period of the discharge spark in the ignition control after top dead center.

HYBRID VEHICLE ENGINE IDLING CONTROL

Aspects of the present invention relate to a method and to a control system for controlling an engine and an electric traction motor of a vehicle, the control system comprising one or more controllers, wherein the control system is configured to: receive an indication of engine speed during engine idling; and control the electric traction motor to reduce a difference between the engine speed and an engine idle speed target

METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR ENGINE CONTROL

Methods and systems are provided for reducing a spark plug soot load and a combustion chamber soot load by controlling spark plug timing while injecting water or washer fluid. In one example, water or washer fluid is injected during a torque reduction while advancing spark timing so as to provide at least a portion of the torque reduction while opportunistically cleaning soot from the spark plug and combustion chamber. By reducing spark plug soot load, misfire occurrence is reduced, while pre-ignition occurrence is reduced by decarbonizing the combustion chamber.

In at least some implementations, a method of controlling engine idle speed includes comparing engine speed to a speed threshold where the speed threshold may include a range of speeds, if the engine speed is outside of the speed threshold, adjusting the timing of an ignition spark up to a threshold amount of ignition timing adjustment, and if the engine speed is not within said speed threshold after adjustment up to the threshold amount of ignition timing adjustment then adjusting the air/fuel mixture provided to the engine to bring the engine speed within said speed threshold.

Method and device for controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine of a portable work device

The invention relates to a method and a control device for operating an internal combustion engine of a portable work device, said method having the following method steps: a) storing a starting ignition curve for specifying an ignition time after a startup time of the internal combustion engine and an operating ignition curve for specifying the ignition time in a speed range assigned to the nominal operation of the internal combustion engine, b) reading the current engine speed, c) reading at least one time value which indicates the time that has elapsed since a reference time, wherein the reference time can relate to the startup time of the internal combustion engine, and d) determining and/or initiating a switchover process from the starting ignition curve to the operating ignition curve on the basis of the current engine speed and the time value.

Operating an internal combustion engine (110) having at least two combustion chambers (1-6) and at least one exhaust-gas catalytic converter (130). In one example, a beginning of the load operation phase of the internal combustion engine (110) that adjoins a coasting phase is detected. A combustion chamber of the at least two combustion chambers (1-6) is determined as the first combustion chamber; and one of other the combustion chambers is selected as the purging combustion chamber. An exhaust gas of the purging combustion chamber is directed into the same exhaust-gas catalytic converter (130) as an exhaust gas of the first combustion chamber. A first fuel quantity is fed into the purging combustion chamber such that the first fuel quantity, prior to igniting the fuel in the purging combustion chamber, is discharged to be partially or fully non-combusted in the direction of the exhaust-gas catalytic convertor (130).

Engine driven working machine

An engine-driven working machine including a controller by which a time period until the rotation speed limitation mode is canceled can be shortened. After a throttle valve is moved to a fully-closed position by an operation to allow the engine to finish the fast idling state and while the engine is transited to an idling state, the controller cancels the rotation speed limitation mode by detecting an event in which a cycle period of rotation speed variations of the engine is longer than a cycle period of rotation speed variation in the fast idling state.

System and method for controlling an engine based on an oxygen storage capability of a catalytic converter

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a storage capability module and at least one of an engine speed control module and a spark control module. The storage capability module determines a capability of a catalytic converter to store oxygen. The engine speed control module controls a speed of an engine based on the oxygen storage capability of the catalytic converter. The spark control module controls a spark timing of the engine based on the oxygen storage capability of the catalytic converter.

A PCM (60) performs a catalyst early warming control (AWS control) for accelerating warm-up of a catalytic device. When the catalytic device (35) is not in an activated state and a vehicle is traveling, the PCM (60) is configured to perform: a fuel injection control to inject fuel such that a homogeneous fuel-air mixture can be formed in a combustion chamber (11) of an engine (10) so as to generate a homogeneous combustion; an intake air amount control to increase intake air amount; and an ignition control to retard ignition timing from a reference ignition timing. In addition, the PCM (60) is configured to vary ignition timing retard amount corresponding to a difference between the ignition timing retarded by the ignition timing control and the reference ignition timing, in accordance with engine speed and/or engine load.

Generator driven by engine

When an acceptance unit accepts an advance notice, a control unit, controls inflow amount of the air, an air fuel ratio derived from an injection amount of a fuel, and an advance of an ignition timing of an ignition device to temporarily increase a power that can be supplied by a generator. The control unit is determines whether a margin of an opening of a throttle is not less than a predetermined threshold. If the margin of the opening of the throttle is less than the predetermined threshold, the control unit inhibits a temporarily increase of the power. If the margin of the opening of the throttle is not less than the predetermined threshold, the control unit permits the temporarily increase of the power.
