Provided is an ignition control device capable of suppressing wear of an ignition plug due to occurrence of a re-strike without adding a component. An ECU 123 used as an ignition control device includes: an ignition signal calculation unit 203 that calculates a start timing and an end timing of re-energization with a primary current in one ignition process, compares the end timing of the re-energization with the timing at which the frequency of occurrence of a re-strike decreases, and determines whether to perform the re-energization; and an ignition signal generation unit 204 that generates an ignition signal for generating at least one or more spark discharges in the ignition process, outputs the ignition signal to the ignition coil, then generates the ignition signal when the ignition signal calculation unit determines to perform the re-energization, outputs the ignition signal to the ignition coil at the start timing of the re-energization, and does not generate the ignition signal when the ignition signal calculation unit determines not to perform the re-energization.

The apparatus can also include an operational feedback system and a controller. The operational feedback system can measure at least one of a voltage value and a current value of the coaxial cavity resonator assembly in the combustion environment. The controller can be configured to determine a condition of the coaxial cavity resonator assembly and modulate operation of the coaxial cavity resonator assembly based at least in part on the determined condition.

An apparatus for igniting a fuel mixture provides an ignition system for generating a high-voltage ignition voltage, a circuit device comprising a circuit for superimposing a high-frequency signal on to the high-voltage ignition voltage, a spark plug in an engine block, and a transmission element having a high-voltage conductor which is guided in an insulation element. The high-voltage conductor is used for transmitting the ignition voltage, onto which the high-frequency signal has been superimposed, to the spark plug. Further provided is an electrically conducting shielding element which surrounds the high-voltage conductor in an electromagnetically shielding manner at least along one portion of the longitudinal axis of the high-voltage conductor. The shielding element is connected in an electrically conducting manner to a ground potential of the circuit device and establishes a connection between the ground potential of the circuit device and a ground electrode of the spark plug.

Plasma Assisted Spark Ignition Systems and Methods

A plasma assisted spark ignition system includes an ignitor and a power supply. The first ignitor includes: a casing having a first end, a second end that forms a first electrode, and a longitudinally extending passage, a second electrode which protrudes longitudinally outward from an opening at the second end of the casing and laterally spaced inwardly to form a spark gap, and an electrical insulator (dielectric) surrounding a portion of the second electrode, and which has a terminus that is at least closely spaced to an interior surface of the end of the casing. The power supply supplies a plurality of voltage pulses to the ignitor per ignition event to generate a flash over on the dielectric. Subsequent pulses in an ignition event may be at lower amplitude than an initial pulse in the ignition event. Pulses may, for example, have a duration on the order of a nanosecond.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR OPERATING TRAVELING SPARK IGNITER AT HIGH PRESSURE

An ignition circuit and a method of operating an igniter (preferably a traveling spark igniter) in an internal combustion engine, including a high pressure engine. A high voltage is applied to electrodes of the igniter, sufficient to cause breakdown to occur between the electrodes, resulting in a high current electrical discharge in the igniter, over a surface of an isolator between the electrodes, and formation of a plasma kernel in a fuel-air mixture adjacent said surface. Following breakdown, a sequence of one or more lower voltage and lower current pulses is applied to said electrodes, with a low “simmer” current being sustained through the plasma between pulses, preventing total plasma recombination and allowing the plasma kernel to move toward a free end of the electrodes with each pulse.

At this time, a period of the pulse signal for corona discharge is shorter than a period of the pulse signal for arc discharge.
