Creating 3D mark on protective coating on metal part using mask and metal part so formed
A method for creating a three-dimensional (3D) mark in a protective coating including at least one of a TBC and a bond coating over a metal part, is provided. The method may include positioning a mask over the protective coating, the mask including an opening pattern therein; and performing an abrasive waterjet process on the protective coating using the mask. The abrasive waterjet erodes a first portion of the protective coating exposed through the first opening pattern to create the 3D mark. The mask is removed, leaving the 3D mark in the protective coating. The 3D mark only partially penetrates through the protective coating. A metal part may include a metal body, a protective coating over the metal body, and the 3D mark in the protective coating, is also provided. The 3D mark in the protective coating may include an opening having a width of between 30 and 300 micrometers.

Gas turbine engine operating schedules for optimizing ceramic matrix composite component life
A gas turbine engine system includes an engine component comprising ceramic matrix composite materials, at least one control system configured to control at least a temperature of the engine component, and a controller. The controller includes a degradation map stored therein. The degradation map includes degradation fields, each field defined by a unique range of temperatures and stresses of the component and correlated to different types of degradation of the component. The controller is configured to determine a first temperature and stress of the component and a first field based on the first temperature and stress, determine a second field different from the first and a second temperature and stress that would locate the component in the second field, and instruct the control system to change the temperature of the component from the first to the second temperature to locate the component in the second field.
System and method for monitoring a turbomachine with anomaly detection corrected by a wear factor
A system for monitoring the state of health of a monitored aircraft engine comprises an anomaly detection unit which analyses engine operating parameters and raises an alarm if a result of the analysis of one of the engine operating parameters crosses a threshold, the alarm being associated with a probability of a given type of engine damage occurring. The system further comprises an engine operating conditions monitoring unit which determines a state of wear of the engine, and an alarm corroboration unit which weights the said probability of occurrence by the determined state of wear. The invention is applicable to the preventive maintenance of turbomachines.
OUTPUT POWER MANAGEMENT FOR ENGINES
Methods and systems for operating an engine are provided. An engine core temperature is monitored. When the engine core temperature is below an engine thermal limit adjusted for a level of deterioration of the engine, an output power of the engine is set in accordance with a reference power based on non-thermal limits of the engine. When the engine core temperature is near or above the engine thermal limit adjusted for the level of deterioration of the engine, the output power of the engine is set to a value lower than the reference power based on non-thermal limits of the engine to reduce the engine core temperature.
Output power management for engines
Methods and systems for operating an engine are provided. An engine core temperature is monitored. When the engine core temperature is below an engine thermal limit adjusted for a level of deterioration of the engine, an output power of the engine is set in accordance with a reference power based on non-thermal limits of the engine. When the engine core temperature is near or above the engine thermal limit adjusted for the level of deterioration of the engine, the output power of the engine is set to a value lower than the reference power based on non-thermal limits of the engine to reduce the engine core temperature.
Secondary systems and methods of control for variable area fan nozzles
A control system for a variable area fan nozzle (VAFN) is disclosed. The VAFN may have a plurality of petals and may be for use with a gas turbine engine. The control system may include a primary system configured to acquire primary data indicative of an operating condition of the VAFN, a secondary system configured to acquire secondary data indicative of a current operating condition of the gas turbine engine, and a control module in operative communication with the primary system and the secondary system. The control module may be configured to: determine a nozzle area of the VAFN based at least in part on the primary data, adjust the determined nozzle area based on the secondary data, and position the plurality of petals according to the adjusted nozzle area.
Control of rotor stress within turbomachine during startup operation
Embodiments of the disclosure provide a method for controlling steam pressure within a turbine component. The method includes calculating a predicted stress on a rotor of the turbine component based on a predicted steam flow with the inlet valve in a minimum load position, a rotor surface temperature, and an inlet steam temperature, and determining whether the predicted stress exceeds a threshold. If the predicted stress exceeds the threshold, the inlet valve adjusts to a warming position. When steam in the discharge passage reaches a target pressure, the exhaust valve partially closes while maintaining the warming position of the inlet valve. If a safety parameter of the turbine component violates a boundary, the exhaust valve partially opens while maintaining the warming position of the inlet valve. When the predicted stress does not exceed the threshold, the inlet valve opens to at least the minimum load position.
Electrical power generator for a gas turbine engine
An aircraft electrical power generation system includes an AC generator having a rotor including a plurality of electromagnetic rotor-windings and stator including plurality of electrical stator-windings. The rotor mechanically coupled to a shaft of a gas turbine engine by transmission-system. The generator includes a frequency controller, a torque sensor determining a torque on the transmission-system by the generator and controller to operate the system in first and second modes. In first mode, the power output frequency of the generator controlled by the frequency controller within limits, and reduced idle signal going to a turbine engine controller. In second mode, the power output frequency of the generator not controlled by the frequency controller and increased idle signal going to the turbine engine controller. The controller operates the system in first mode when the torque is below a limit, and in second mode when the torque is above a limit.
