The mezzanines divide the processing chamber (32) into a plurality of processing zones. A sealing system (90) seals the interior mezzanine (40) relative to the spiral stack (26). A sealing system (130) seals the outer mezzanine (42) relative to the exterior of the spiral stack, and a seal system (132) seals the outer mezzanine relative to the walls (56, 58) of the housing, thereby to limit the leakage of the processing fluid between the mezzanines and the spiral stack (26) and housing walls so that as much as the thermal processing medium is possible is forced through the spiral stack for processing work products carried on the conveyor system (22).

A back-up ring (1) for a gland seal includes at least two part ring portions (2,4). Each part ring portion comprises first (6, 10) and second (8, 12) ends. Each end has an undulating surface (22, 24) for overlapping in engagement with a corresponding undulating surface on an end of another part ring portion, to form the back-up ring (1). When the part ring portions (2,4) are assembled to form the back-up ring (1) and are held together by axial and/or radial compression, the engagement of the undulating surfaces (22, 24) restricts relative movement between the part ring portions. A seal assembly (34) including the back-up ring (1) is also disclosed.

A plate heat exchanger comprising a top head, a bottom head, four side panels and four corner girders. The side panels and the corner girders extend along a longitudinal direction from the bottom head to the top head, and each side panel is associated with two corner girders. The top head, the bottom head, the four side panels and the four corner girders are joined together to form a sealed enclosure for housing a plate pack of stacked heat-exchanging plates. A continuous gasket assembly is arranged in a contact region between at least one side panel and two corner girders, the top head and the bottom head. The gasket assembly is located in a groove. Moreover, the gasket assembly is a segmented gasket assembly composed of plural gasket segments, and each gasket segment is made of graphite material. Also disclosed is a method for assembling such a plate heat exchanger.
