A petroleum pipeline safety system for preventing contamination of an environmentally sensitive area close to a pipeline is provided. The system includes a first portion of the pipeline including an upstream portion of the pipeline supplying a flow of fluid material and a flow restriction downstream of the first portion of the pipeline. The system further includes a second portion of the pipeline downstream of the flow restriction, receiving the flow of fluid material from the first portion and conveying the flow of fluid material through the environmentally sensitive area to a downstream portion of the pipeline. The flow restriction is configured to create a lower pipeline internal pressure within the second portion as compared to a pipeline internal pressure within the first portion. The system further includes a third portion of the pipeline downstream of the environmentally sensitive area and including the downstream portion of the pipeline.

An integrity monitoring system for a lined pipeline is provided for monitoring the integrity of a polymer liner in a host pipe. Methods and apparatus are described by which a lined pipeline is provided with such an integrity monitoring system sensor cable is able to bridge a joint between sections of lined pipe, for example by routing the sensor cable across the joint via a channel in an electrofusion fitting or by connecting successive lengths of sensor cable via pass-throughs in an electrofusion fitting. Advantageously, the sensor cable is disposed within a continuous annulus between linings and host pipes, and the continuous annulus is maintained across pipe joints using electrofusion fittings.

System and method for corrosion detection

An improved mechanism for evaluation of degradation criticality is described. Corresponding apparatuses, systems, methods, and computer readable media are provided. The evaluation of corrosion criticality is utilized to estimate a failure pressure of a pipeline that is subject to structural degradation (e.g., metal loss corrosion). The evaluation, in some embodiments, is utilized with a specific tool configured for controlling or otherwise regulate pipeline operations responsive to the estimated failure pressure. The evaluation is a specific technical process whereby multiple failure paths through anomalies (structural defects arising from degradation features) are utilized in concert to determine an estimated failure pressure. The failure pressure, in some embodiments, is used to control actuation of one or more valve regulator features or to guide excavation.

Method for pressurized leak testing

A method for testing a device under test includes the steps of applying a vacuum to an interior of the device under test. Pressurizing a predetermined portion on an exterior of the device under test with helium to detect a potential pressure leak. Utilizing a large pressure differential during the exterior testing of the device under test as compared to the vacuum applied during to the interior of the device under test. Detecting a potential leak in the device under test while leaving no residual helium in a wetted area of the device under test.

Sensing events affecting liquid flow in a liquid distribution system

By monitoring pressure transients in a liquid within a liquid distribution system using only a single sensor, events such as the opening and closing of valves at specific fixtures are readily detected. The sensor, which can readily be coupled to a faucet bib, transmits an output signal to a computing device. Each such event can be identified by the device based by comparing characteristic features of the pressure transient waveform with previously observed characteristic features for events in the system. These characteristic features, which can include the varying pressure, derivative, and real Cepstrum of the pressure transient waveform, can be used to select a specific fixture where a valve open or close event has occurred. Flow to each fixture and leaks in the system can also be determined from the pressure transient signal. A second sensor disposed at a point disparate from the first sensor provides further event information.
