MULTI-FUNCTIONAL COMPOSITION OF MATTER FOR RAPID REMOVAL OF MERCURY FROM A FLUE GAS

A multi-functional composition of matter that is useful for injection into a flue gas stream to rapidly and efficiently remove mercury from the flue gas stream. The multi-functional composition of matter may include a fixed carbon sorbent and minerals, halogens in the form of halide salts, as well as other physical and chemical properties to enhance (1) the oxidation reaction kinetics for the oxidation of mercury species and (2) the mass diffusion kinetics of the mercury species.

Some aspects of the present disclosure relate to a method comprising obtaining a sorbent polymer composite material, contacting the sorbent polymer composite material with mercury vapor to form a used sorbent polymer composite material; wherein the used sorbent polymer composite material comprises oxidized mercury and wherein the used sorbent polymer composite material emits oxidized mercury vapor; and contacting the used sorbent polymer composite material with a halogen source, so as to result in a treated sorbent polymer composite material. In some embodiments, the treated sorbent polymer composite material emits less than 0.01 μg oxidized mercury vapor per minute per gram of the treated sorbent polymer composite, compared to a used sorbent polymer composite, when measured at 65° C. in air having a relative humidity of 95%.

A flue gas is cleaned by feeding same to a filtering separator. The filtering separator is accommodated in a housing, and the housing has a pre-filter side ahead of the filtering separator and a clean side following the filtering separator in the flue gas flow direction. A filter element has an adsorbent formed of dust-free spheroidal charcoal on the clean side of the housing. The flue gas flows through the adsorbent in the filter element. Harmful substances from the group including mercury and/or dioxin and/or furan and/or further heavy metals are thereby removed from the flue gas.

Reducing mercury emissions from the burning of coal

Sorbent components containing halogen, calcium, alumina, and silica are used in combination during coal combustion to produce environmental benefits. Sorbents such as calcium bromide are added to the coal ahead of combustion and other components are added into the flame or downstream of the flame, preferably at minimum temperatures to assure complete formation of the refractory structures that result in various advantages of the methods. When used together, the components reduce emissions of elemental and oxidized mercury; increase the level of Hg, As, Pb, and/or Cl in the coal ash; decrease the levels of leachable heavy metals (such as Hg) in the ash, preferably to levels below the detectable limits; and make a highly cementitious ash product.

CONTROL OF COMBUSTION SYSTEM EMISSIONS

A process for capturing undesirable combustion products produced in a high temperature combustion system in which a carbonaceous fuel is utilized. Very finely sized particles of alkaline earth carbonates or hydroxides, with or without added ground ash, are provided in slurry form, are dried and milled to provide unagglomerated, sub-micron-sized particles that are injected along with pulverized coal and an oxidizing agent into the high temperature combustion zone of a furnace. The particles capture and neutralize the gases that result in condensable acids, including SO.sub.x, NO.sub.x, HCL, and HF, as well as capturing toxic metals that are present in the combustion products, they mitigate ash fouling and slagging, and they facilitate economic heat exchange that permits fuel savings and recovery of water for use in other processes.
